so i swallowed a peice of shreaded tire yesterday ... the van in front of me ran it over, then it kicked up and smacked me right in the front bumper.
Here are some pics of the damage. Any guesses out there if this can be fixed, or needs replacement? The plastic is cracked all the way through. Any idea of cost?
Of course most anything can be repaired. But it's more of an issue of labor vs. replacement cost. That's not an easy area to rework. It can be done, but the amount of labor $$$ could exceed or come close to replacement value. I would therefore do the replacement. The least expensive repair would be to buy a used front fascia here on the forum or from eBay. I've seen used front fascias in perfect condition sell for $100 to $200. My guess is that the body work alone would come to more than that to repair yours.
Best of luck with the repairs bud.

Body parts on our cars are cheap compared to some other cars. A repair can go bad and not look right. I am not rich, but if I need to redo a front bumper, it will be with new, unless I can find a used one in the right color.

it has happened to me twice. First was a 2 x 4 coming out of the bed of a pickup truck. That was about $1,400. They just replace the entire fascia. You can't repair it.
Seond time was . . . don't know what I hit as it was 2 AM in the mountains and I was pissed. Have insurance check in hand for $1.200.
I would guess yours would be $1,000+.
There are two types of potential insurance coverage for the repair. One is collision coverage. That covers you when YOU hit something. Then there is COMPREHENSIVE which covers you when something hits you. The 2 x 4 was flying through the air and stuck me so it was comprehensive. I have ZERO deductibe for comprehensive. Lucky me. So it cost me nothing. You might have a deductibe on comprehensive and you might not. I have a deductible on collision but not on comprehensive. That is not unusual but possible. You can not buy collision without a deductible but you can for comprehensive.
The second incident was something flew off a truck and struck me. They asked if it hit the ground first. Hell it was dark and I said no it did not hit the ground first it hit me in the air. I got educated with the first incident.
Study my response and maybe you might be lucky too.

That crack can be fixed easily by any shop worth a salt, and I know a couple body shops around here that would do the crack and paint for around $700..... And thats NY!
BUmmer about the car! Same thing happened to me during the 2003 National Caravan. Tire tread spun from under the vehicle ahead of me and hit me on the top of my head light. Got off lucky, just a couple of paint chips. Very minor. Learned my lesson not follow cars ahead of me too closely.
The "trade it in" comment was kinda funny ... this car is a lease and its over in dec this year ... it continues to have electrical gremlins, nit picky things, so I am eager to rid my self of it and get a gently used c5 to replace it someday. i'd keep this one but i swear its haunted.
Sounds like replacing it is the best option; and possibly cheapest if I can find a used bumper cover on ebay. That was a great idea.
Tiger Shark front end crossed my mind ... but since i'm getting rid of this soon, i want the cheapest way out.
Not worth fixing, I see them in good shape all the time at shows, $2-300 with lights and ducts still in them. I even got one my color with NO blemishes for $300, repainted my old one when I did the MCM hood and put the spare on. Now I have an extra!!
I'm not sure of the name of the shop but it shares a building with Corvette Care (the only place I will take my car) on Ferris Rd. I'm sure if you call Lloyd at Corvette Care he can get you in touch with them. I was in there over the weekend and he said they do really good work. The number is 614-471-3331
