I don't know anything about mechanics, so sorry. But I just had the infamous headlight problem with one of them not going up. I tried taking off the contacts and cleaning them up but now the other headlight which was fine is making a grinding noise when it only goes down, not up. The manual raise **** keeps spinning when the headlight goes down and I can see it spin for a few seconds, makes a grinding noise, then it stops. What is the deal and what do I need to do to fix it? I can't even figure out how to get the headlight off!

The gears in the headlight motors are plastic, so when they strip they make a grinding noise when you close them. The fix is to install metal gears. Scroll down on this page and look for Headlight Gears. There is a link to where to buy the hear from and directions on how to replace the motor gear.
Depends on what year you have as to the 'difficulty' level of fix. If earlier 97, 98, 99, chances are good you have the easy fix type. That is, you don't have to crack open the gear case. Just 3 small screws to access the gears.
If not very 'mechanical', you might want to enlist some help. It's not hard, just tedious and a fair assortment of tools are needed to get the headlight assembly out. The biggest problem is dropping a nut or bolt while taking the assembly out of the car.
And, might as well do both sides as it's just a short matter of time before the other one strips out.
