Another One Bites The Dust!
Well...I have mixed emotions today. I finally sold the Z and at a good price. I sold it because my daughter is going to college this year and my son next year and I need to make them the priority for now. I will definitely miss the Z06 but hope to get another one in a few years. It was my first Corvette and my dream car. It took me 45 years to get the first one...hopefully not too long until the next! Even if I never get another Vette, I feel fortunate to have owned at least one in my lifetime...alot of folks never even get that far. I didn't think I would ever be able to procure one myself, but have always aspired to...it has been everything I thought it would be and more. One of the greatest parts of Vette ownership is becoming a part of the Corvette fraternity. My wife is constantly amazed at how quickly other Vette owners will say hi, do the wave, and/or just enter into conversation like we're old pals.
I sold the car to a great guy who told me that the Corvette has always been his dream car as well...this is his first. He was really impressed with how well I took care of it...he got a cream puff! Many of my fellow Vette enthusiasts reccomended that I sell the kids instead of the car, but after thinking about this for a while I decided that the car should go...particularly because when I am old the kids will take care of me...but the car...well, you know how demanding they can be!
I have really enjoyed having this forum as a resource and have learned a lot from you guys. I don't know if it is permissable to hang around while Vetteless, but it might help me get through the withdrawal period! I am going to look for an early C5...hopefully I can find one within my greatly reduced car budget! Whatever the case, enjoy your Corvette and be thankful for the fun it affords you. Hopefully I can rejoin the ranks before too long. In the meantime...
I was getting worried I was going to have to sell some of my toys when my daughter left for college a couple years ago. Never saved for it and when the time got here it was no big deal. Its no worse than a big car payment a month extra for her rent ($645 her share between 5 other roomates in a big 6 bedroom new house) and 5000/year tuition/books etc. isnt too bad either i thought for a state university. She buys her own food and gas cause she wants to and I dont argue.. LOL.
Hey Scott - this is Phil with the blue Z. Instead of helping Jeff inspect your car, I was too busy chatting with Chuck about his 402. I could see yours was anally cared for. :: wink :: Hopefully, seeing Chuck wax his and start it and rev it...etc...will cause you to throw down for another one soon. And I still want/need a ride in his when it's fully broken in! I'm deciding which way to go for more power, H/C or take the plunge for the 402.
Owning a Corvette is certainly no requirement for hanging around these parts! I did it for years without a Corvette, and I'm sure you'll be back in the Corvette saddle as soon as you can. Kudos to you for putting your family first!
It gets better when your kids succeed and you get another Vette down the road. Sold my 86 C4 in 90 to start the savings program. Got my 95 C4 Vert in 97 after kids off to school. Today I have my Z06 and two very successful young adults. It doesn't get better than that, even with all the toys and mchouses combined.
I am looking for my father. I was sold to Gypsies back in the mid sixties so that my dad could buy his first Corvette. I don't know what my last name was, but he named me Muncie. I was told my mom cried about it for two whole days, but when the convertible top was put down she broke into a big grin.
You sold yours so your Daughter can start college. You are a good man.
I agree, 100%! Let’s speculate on the future a little bit.
1) Daughter graduates, gets good job, get own Z06 "newer!" Benefit - dad gets to drive new Z06.
2) Daughter graduates, marries, "we all hope - fine young man" then becomes stay home mom raises her children and never utilizes the gift dad bestowed upon her. Benefit - grandpa.
3) Daughter graduates, marries, buys hubby new Z06 and he won't let you drive it.

Hey...thanks for the replies guys. We got my daughter settled in Dallas last week and she is doing great. It is hard to have her so far away from home and around Dallas Cowboy fans to boot! I know I did the right thing in selling my car. It went to a great new owner who is probably as obsessive/compulsive as I am with my cars, so I know it will be well treated. I did choke up a little when I watched it drive away...but maybe I shouldn't confess that here...none of you guys have formed emotional attachments with your cars..have you!
The withdrawal symptoms haven't been too bad. The usual shakes, sweats and then some funny visions of me driving a Yugo with a big wing on the back...other than that nightmare...not too bad! I have looked at a couple of 98 C5's. My budget is probably going to net me a 98 or 99 with high miles. As long as I find one that has been well cared for I will be happy for now. I will look at it as a "project" car that I can put a few $$ into as the newly restrained budget allows. All things being equal, I'd rather be in an older C5 than revert back to my Mustang Cobra days...two years in a Z06 have ruined me for that!
Thanks again for all the replies...
slong...some very astute prognostications, however you left out one possibility...daughter graduates from college, gets high paying job and buys dad new Z06 just to say thanks!
Chuck...I met your parents recently when they came to town to visit your wife and kids...they are very happy with their Corvette and still feel good about the trade!
GreekPT...it was nice to meet you the other day. Good luck with your track time and keep the shiny side up!
It must have been hard, but you have your priorities in the right place. I know your daughter must appreciate what you have done for her. I'm quickly approaching being in the same boat. I have 4 daughters, that will be senior, junior, and sophmore. I get a 2 year break after that then my youngest will go. 4 weddings and MY funeral will be after that Like others have said, you are a good dad, and don't be a stranger!
Best of luck Scott. I have been thinking along the same lines. My daughter will start next year and I hate to see her start off with debt. So might have mine up for sale by next summer. Take care, Don

Thanks guys! I do feel good about the decision and even though I do miss the car, there is no way to compare the importance of a car to the importance of you kids. I will have many more cars in my lifetime, but I have only one son and one daughter and they win hands down everytime!

I don't know what i'm going to have to sell to afford college for the kiddies, but it will be a while. 4 kids ages 9,7,5,& 4. We started college savings plans, but most likely they won't be enough. You did the right thing, congradulations for being a good dad, and a stand up guy. Too many people nowadays are me me me, instead of thinking about the family first. I'm 43, and 2 yrs ago could finally afford a Z06, but sacrifice got me here. Good Luck, you'll again be a vette owner.
