I Just Recently Purchased A 99 Coupe, And On A Couple Of Occasions On Start-up..when I Put It Into Gear (any ) It Will Stall. The Display Will Read " Pull Out Key - Wait 10sec's And Restart" Which I Do And Its Ok. I Wait For Fuel Pump To Engage And Stop Before I Start Car, Any Suggestions?
hey Spud, welcome to the club. Do you know if you have a CLB installed? If so, this is not uncommon to hear about. I am not sure anyone has figured out exactly why this occurs, but I bet others wil chime in with theories, like marginal batteries, dirty gounding point, etc.
When you say you put it in gear and it stalls, does it stall before you start moving or after (A4?).
If it's after you start moving, it could be related to the Column Lock. But this message is not only for Column Lock logic, it's also for the Pass Key system. Your key pellet contacts in the ignition cylinder may be dirty and causing the BCM to misread the pellet value. Try cleaning the key slot with some alcohol.
Here's my scenario:
- Car was locked via the fob.
- Attempted to unlock with the fob, car did nothing.
- Used the key in the door instead, unlocked the car, opened the door, alarm went off.
- Used the fob button (unlock I think? Was a bit flustered at the time, since this was at the softball fields with lots of people... )
- After the game, used fob to unlock the car
- Got the 'remove key' message
Neither has happened again (fob not working nor the remove key message)

when you say key slot..just wipe some alcohol on it or clean the key off and insert it in to clean it?.....thx
I hate to tell you, but it sounds like the infamous steering column lock problem that GM has with our vettes. I had the same error message before about a year and a half ago. There was a recall out for the column lock. I had the recall done and then had more problems with getting that same pull key wait 10 second message AFTER the recall. Took it back to the dealer and they supposedly disconnected my column lock completely. Last nite, I got the pull key message again, and my car died every time I put it in gear and got over 1mph(which is what it is supposed to do b/c it shuts the fuel off to the engine when it thinks the column is locked). I was stranded in my own driveway and had to have it towed to the dealer. Today the dealer is telling me I need a new column lock module installed and they are paying for it. So, I will wait and see if it works. Good luck to ya!!!
It is failing a steering lock feedback to the bcm. Gm has a special policy on some cars call the dealer with vin to run.this has been a problem with many answers
