Default Steering Column Lock

Got bit last night. I've had my `03 AE MN6 CPE for 1 yr. and washed it for the 2nd time yesterday. (gets wiped and detail sprayed after every outing) Took it out and got the Service Steering Column Lock msg. but no Pull Key and Wait 10 Seconds. Thought I was going to need a tow. Parked car, took care of business, came back out and started to same Service Steering Column Lock msg. Strange thing is no lock up. Messaged stayed on all the way home. I got it into garage and message is still on, but wheel isn't locked up. With car off wheel is locked so it's functioning as expected except for message. Recall work hasn't been done. I received dealer service history when I purchased it last year.

Question is can I still do a CLB? Why did I get Service Steering Column Lock msg. but no Pull Key and Wait 10 Seconds msg.? If I can do CLB now, is there anywhere I can get install instructions in advance so car can be all ready upon receipt?

Thanks in advance

If I'm understanding you, the steering column is now LOCKED? If that's the case you'll need to get it unlocked prior to installing the CLB, which is what you should do immediately. To get it unlocked you have to pull your steering wheel violently left or right which the key is in the on position to get it to release. Let us know if it becomes unlocked.

No, that's just it. It's not locked, except of course when the car is off. The only sign of any problem is the DIC message- Service Steering Column Lock- other than that everything was normal. But I won't drive it again for fear of it locking up away from home. My question was, once this message occurs, can I do the CLB without any other work, i.e. dealership recall service.

I've read all the info, I just didn't see my exact situation described. Funny thing is I was planning on waiting til Carlisle to see if I could pick up a CLB there. Now I'll need it or something else to get there.

my guess is that as long as it does unlock, you can install the CLB. The DIC message can be reset.

Corvettes of Houston says as long as none of the recalls have been done, the CLB will solve this issue. I have one on the way overnight.
Thanks for the replies.

Default Help

OK now I'm confused. As noted above I ordered the CLB which should be here tomorrow. To get a jump I dismantled dash. Looked for the harness and what do I find but evidence of an early recall. "If you have White, Purple, Green, Black on either side of the connector, then you DO have the recall mod." So I remembered I had received a VIS with my purchase last year and lo and behold under bulletin 4006 work was done...on 9/29/04...V1145-04006- perform reprogram and functional test- manuals on... So where I stand now is it starts and runs. DIC reads 'Service Column Lock'. Hitting reset clears message but it returns. However column does not lock even when key is out. Seems like the reverse is happening, that it's stuck in the unlocked position. Was this early recall the Harness K service or something else? Should I install the CLB? Or do I have to have the dealer uninstall or replace something first? Thanks again in advance.

The first 4006 recall was just to reprogram the PCM so that it would cut fuel and not let you drive the car with the column locked under certain low voltage conditions, and should not have involved any wiring changes.
If you got a notice for the last recall, I would go ahead and let the dealer remove the lockplate and install the Harness K kit. Then you can decide if you want to leave the Harness K in, or replace it with the aftermarket CLB.
If you cannot hear the actuator cycle when you turn the key on and off, then it is likely the actuator is stuck in the unlocked position as you suggested.

My car used to get stuck in the unlock position. It is now working normal again. Everytime I started or turned off the car service column lock would appear. I liked it, never had to worry about it locking closed. Then I had to pull the battery for something and then it started working again

There are isses with the CLB on SOME early cars 1997, 1998. I am going to do a test with mine. I am going to turn on the ignition, and after the cloumn unlocks, just unplug it. I don't care about messages on the DIC. I just don't ant it locking, ever when I am out.

Default FIXED! and CLB'd

Well, did some further reading and experimenting. Turns out I think the acutator was stuck in the open position. Tried pulling fuse 25 & 29 as suggested for correcting codes after CLB install. After a couple of times pulling and reinserting fuses, column locked. Then I got the pull key and wait 10 seconds message twice. Next time and subsequent tries, column locked normally and threw no codes. Next I installed CLB which takes all of 20 minutes. Works perfectly so far. Now I'm all again!! While I was at it I installed a CAGS bypass I had ordered from COH with the CLB. That is a 5 minute install and it works perfectly. I'd suggest both to anyone. Thanks for all the info on the forum. And thanks to 97vette for the detailed instructions. If anyone in northern NJ needs help with either of the above I'm there.

Try cleaning the black pellet on the key with alchol or try another key to see if that works. May just be dirty.
