Default Visual difference between 01 and 02+ LS6's?

Is there any way to tell the difference between the '01 and '02+ LS6's? Mine was replaced in my '01, and I am curious if they used another '01, or updated (it was replaced in '03 through GM).

The exhaust manifolds are slightly different on the '02 and later, although they could have kept your original exhaust manifolds. Other than that, I can't think of any external visual differences - the rest of the changes are all inside the engine and can't be seen.

There must be a way to look up what year the engine is from the serial number or casting number on the block and/or heads though.

If this was done via warranty work then I would bet that they installed the 385 HP version.

That is what I was thinking too, but it would be nice to know for sure.

Not definitive, but check the MAF. If it has a screen, it's a 2001. The screen was omitted in 2002.

Here is the best portrayal of 01 v 02 Z06s. You'll need to wade through it for the visible stuff.

People pull the screen on the 2001 cars, plus it is possible that the screen could have been left in even if a 2002+ motor was installed.

True. Not definitive, but an indicative.

Another way is to read and new-post the ESN (engine serial number). Someone with access to the power train data base should be able to convert the number to a date of manufacture.

Another path is to use the VIN to pull the maint. history. Then use the PN on the motor to ID the year.

A final way is to dyno the motor and post the results. Owners will help ID the year by the numbers it produces.

Where would I find the ESN? I looked on the passenger side head (like on my old vette), but there is no number there.

Can't tell you. I sold mine.

But here is a thread discussing way to differentiate an 01 and 02 Z.
