Default Oil change question?

How often do you change the oil in a C5? The dealer told me it could go 10,000 miles before an oil change and to moinitor the oil life gauge. I have always changed vehicle oil at 3000. Whats the scoop here?

The dealer is right..... The 3000 mile oil change went out w/ the Nash Rambler. Follow the monitor and be guided by what it says.

Synthetics have better resistence to shear thinning and enhanced detergency which permit extended drain intervals.

WOW Someone actually got some accurate advice from a dealer? That's gotta be a first!

In your owner's manual it will tell you that the oil should be changed at least once a year, but trust your oil life monitor. It will tell you when to change it.

These oil changes at regular intervals only benefits the oil companies and the joint performing the labor (assuming it's not you).

Wow, an honest dealer, they are correct, go by the oil life monitor or once a year.

You can use the oil life monitor on the car to tell when you need to change oil - it is pretty reliable. The mileage you get between changes depends on a number of factors that are built into the computer program on the car.

I just changed my oil yesterday. It had 6000 miles on it and my DIC said it had 49% life remaining. It lacked one day of being a whole year since last changed. It was down one quart after that many miles so I felt pretty good about that. My car is an '02 MN6.

Is the rule strictly to use the DIC recommendation regardless of time or should it be changed at one year even if the DIC says it is still good.

I always go by the one year rule myself!

The OLM doesn't reset itself. You have to do it.

1. Turn the ignition to ON, with the engine off.
2. Press the TRIP button so the OIL LIFE percentage is displayed.
3. Press RESET and hold for two seconds. OIL LIFE REMAIN 100% will appear.
4. Turn the key to OFF.

I change the oil and filter in all eight of my cars, every 2,000 miles. I've been doing that since the late 1960's. Why change now. I tried going 2,500 miles between oil changes on the 2004, it just didn't make me happy. So I went back to the 2,000 mile changes.
With oil changes, do it as often as you are comfortable with.

Sorry, but do you think oil/engine technology has changed at all in the last 40 years?

I have a 1998 Coupe, which uses 10,000 miles as maximum (later years use 15,000). I change near zero on the monitor (1-2% left). I have had oil analysis done and they always show oil life left. Trust the DIC, it is accurate!

Why change now? If you don't race the car and use synthetic oil it is:

1. Complete waste of oil.
2. Complete waste of money.
3. Will not make one bit of difference in the real world to prolong the life of the engine.

In the 60's it was a good idea. Not today.
