Default Ring Replacement Question

Ok, my dealer called me yesterday and told me my rings are in and to call him to set up an appointment.

Anybody have the ring job done yet and what were the results.

I'm trying to decide if I want to go through with it or live with it. I don't like the thought of my engine being torn apart.

So if any of you have have the rings replaced please post your results.

Thanks

Hi--
I'm bringing my car to have the rings replaced this week. I live in So. Calif. & the dealer said to figure about five days to complete. I sure hope this works.

I'm also waiting on a set of rings. Not too thrilled about having the car tore down. Things I'm worried about...

1. Will pulling the engine cause more leaks later on?
My service manager reassures me its not like cars of yesterday. Only a couple of main seals + head gasket etc. He says the new gaskets are made of neopream (sp) and not like the old cork ones. They don't use gasket sealer like they used to he says.

2. Will this affect the resale value?
Don't know the answer. I guess it depends on who buys it.

3. Will the car get damaged?

4. Will the fix work? I have no choice and believe it will.

5. Will the engine be damaged if I continue to drive the car?
Using 1qt/500 mi will probably build up carbon and cause problems over the long haul. Something is wrong with the vehicle. It was not designed to use this much oil. Extra Pollution??

Kevin--
I have the same questions & doubts as you. Did you try to get GM to give you an extended warranty, do to these possibilites? When are you having the rings installed? I also requested that the cylinder walls be closely inspected to see if there is any scoring of the cylinder walls, due to the oil leaking past the rings.

GM will not give an extended warranty because they are fixing the problem.
The rings haven't arrived. The dealer will check next week for an eta.

I have heard people say GM doesn't want to replace rings until the vehicle has 10K miles. That could be a problem.

Any ideas for pursuing the extended warranty??

Kevin--
I was told GM wanted at least 5,000 miles; not 10,000 miles before having the dealer run a 1,000 mile oil consumption test & the ring replacement would be approved if you used more than one quart during the test. My car only had 8,900 miles when I filed a complaint under the Calif. lemon law, and I got a follow-up call from the GM Business Resource rep in three days & the GM Zone Manager agreed to the 6 year/100,00 mile warranty two days later. This was after six months of complaining to the dealer & to GM customer service. The BEST person to speak with is the GM Zone Manager, he is the one who really makes all the decisions. As far as how you pursue this, I think I asked you before if you checked your state lemon laws. There is a technical service bulletin on NHTSA site under excessive oil consumption. Would other members who got GM to offer a fair solution please give Kevin some suiggestions?
Thanks,

State Lemon Law says the problem has to fail to be fixed after 4 times within the period of a year.

I don't think doing the oil consumption test counts, since they are not trying to fix the problem.
The last 2 times I took the car to the dealer (once to check oil level, second to pull plugs & check pcv), I was not given a receipt.
The excuse was.. We need to keep a ticket open to order parts, but I have logged your complaints on the ticket.

Kevin--
It sounds like the dealer is playing games. You might try sending an e-mail to Frank Calmes, he gave me a lot of good suggestions.
Good Luck,

Kevin--
Frank Calmes is a long time member of the "other" forum, z06vette.com & you can probably find him in the list of members. He knows people at GM, and offered to try to have someone at GM help me, before I finally got to speak to GM Zone Manager & got the extended warranty.

Has anyone pursued a buy-back due to oil consumption?

You read many people have, but just seems to be rumor.

How do you start the buy-back procedure??

I just sent out my lemon law letter today and am awaiting to see what happens. They have 10 days after I get the reciept back from the certified mail I sent it out in. I don't want the fix, a new car would be nice though :D After burning 3 1/2 quarts in 500 miles, this is ridiculous :mad

I should be picking up my car next week & I don't think anyone is being offered the new pistons, because it isn't related to the oil consumption issue.
Good Luck,
