I picked up a TR '03 w/ 13k miles over the weekend and noticed it had a couple of minor mods. There is obviously an aftermarket shifter in it because its very short and I can hear alot of road noise and feel some heat coming off of it. Did the previous owner not install the rubber isolator correctly?
A lot of people mention that there is some noise with an aftermarket shifter when driving hard. My B&M was a little noisy till I tightend up my ****. Others have stated that an aftermarket **** with more weight will also solve the noise problem.
I just bought my car and it had an aftermarket shifter installed as well. Very short, firm throws. Personally, I don't like it. My car is a daily driver so it becomes a bit much in traffic especially. I had ordered at C6 Z06 shifter before I knew the car had an aftermarket one so I have that waiting to be swapped out. I am looking forward to it. I will know what brand of short throw it is when I remove. It's noisy under heavy/full throttle for sure. Sounds like something is going to fall apart! Sorry I can't help you in fixing the noise problem (only thing I could say was buy a C6 shifter!) Good luck.

take it apart and look at it.... i installed the hust shifter last year and in the instructions they said i could cut the rubber boot or invert the boot.. so i inverted the boot and heard a bunch of noise that wasnt there before, so i thought i installed it wrong or something... so i took it apart and figured i would cut the boot slightly smaller then the housing and strech the boot over it.... put it back together and it eliminated 95% of the noise... so i would take it apart and see if it was inverted or if the boot was cut
My hurst makes noise too, but it's hard to hear anytime over the mufflers anyways (what?) Sorry but there are some posts here about adding something to dampen the vibrations. ***** help too, as my mod red oem was ok but the old school hurst style marble one i have now is very noisy... it comes off tomorrow for the track

Just put a c6 Z06 shifter in my '02Z and love it. Made a big difference, was easy to install (except for the killer c5 shift *** pin), is as quiet as the OEM shifter and is more comfortable.
I actually feel more confident powershifting with the new shifter which makes the car (or me) feel quicker. I definately recommend the c6z06 shifer mod for anybody that drives their Z as a daily driver.

I agree. When I installed my Hurst, I trimmed the boot slightly smaller than the base of the shifter so that it was a tight fit, and I have no noticeable increase in noise.
I just changed out my Hurst for the Six Shooter from MTI racing! WOW!! What a difference, not a rattle one and smoother but just as precise as the Hurst.
