okay i thought the camaro was the bad one...just realized there is a sh*T load of work that goes into replacing a corvette pan as well. What are my other options? I have a temp plug right now that doesn't seem to hold up quite right..dripping a bit of oil. Can it be re threaded? Im really quite furious with Corvette specialty of riverside since they were the ones that changed the oil last, supposedly along with brake fluid...which still looks dirty.
It is possible to re-thread the hole, but it will take a very experienced tech to know how to do it well and not cause more problems. Today a lot of techs are just R & R guys, but it is still possible to find people with top flight skills. Good luck!
A buddy and I just repaired the oil pan plug hole on his wife's Honda Accord that was damaged by an oil change center. We drilled it out and installed a Helicoil threaded insert. Worked great. The oil pan was aluminum like the C5's and the drain hole was harder to get to than the C5's so your's should be easier to fix.
The trick is to drill straight and accurate so the helicoil goes in correctly. Also, smear a bunch of all-purpose grease betreen the drill and tap flutes to help the metal shavings come out with the drill bit and tap and keep most of them out of the pan. We also poured about 3/8 of a quart of oil into the engine after to let it capture any shavings near the drain hole and drain out the hole before refilling the sump with oil.
It's not difficult and shouldn't take much time. Sure saved a lot of time and money not having to replace the pan.
I have been reluctant to put one on my Corvettes due to clearance issues although I think it would work. They last for ever - I have one on my DD - 98 4Runner (175K miles) and change the oil every 3K without fail. Also did the wife's SUV, kids, etc.
