I just bought a 2000 C5 and the sound system is pretty much crap my stock radio in my 99 truck sounded better. Seems to distort pretty easy, is there just a Delco head unit with Bose speakers or is there a amp hidden some where. I was thinking of changing the speakers.
The Bose system has amplifiers in the door for each speaker. For detailed information you should try the audio section. They have all the answers you need.
I consider myself an audiophile and I think that the stock Bose system in the C5 is not bad. It does need a subwoofer (which I've added) but I can turn up the factory system to my heart's content without distortion, even with the bass control maxed.
Are you sure that your (separate) amplifier is not fried and needs replacing, as it would be difficult to blow the speakers with the factory Bose amp (assuming it's working properly).
I get the best sound on the Bose by keeping the manual controllers in the neutral position and using the auto tone feature. The jazz setting gets the best highs and lows.
Could be the amp all I know is when I turn it about half way up it seems to distort pretty good. It should sound better than a stock Delco set up I'll try a well recorded cd and see how that is.
I replaced the 3 1/2 tweeters in the doors and the 6 1/2 in the hatch with Boston Acoustics and the sound is much better. Not the greatest but about 75% better. I just didn't want to replace the head unit.
Well I went in the garage slapped a good cd in and it does sound a lot better, listening to FM doesn't cut it. I'm still interested in changing out the Bose and keeping the head unit. My daily driver has a nice stereo install so I don't want to spend too much on the C5 right now.
Does the whole plastic panel have to come off the rear speakers to get at them or does the grill cover come off? I assume the door panels have to be removed.
The only speakers that are amplified in the C5 are the door "woofers", the 8" speakers have a separate amp for each. All the rest are just getting power from the deck as a regular stereo would. The entire door panels must be removed to replace the door speakers. I replaced the "twiddlers" with Boston Accoustics 3.5" speakers in each door and added a powered 10" bazooka tube in the storage tub in the rear. Sounds fantastic playing CD's. The XM MyFi on the other hand that is hooked up using the AUX function, sounds like poo...
I'm using the COR-HAR changer harness and the adapter (GM-AUX10?) and then the RCA->headphone jack. I've heard it maybe that the MyFi doesn't put out enough power, and may need an RCA line level amp. It just sounds quiet and muffled.
