We've actually tested every LED Taillight bulb that we could find available. Every taillight bulb that we tested was dimmer than standard OEM. Plus another drawback to using these for turn signals is that you would either have to change your flasher, or splice an inline load equalizer for each flashing bulb. Otherwise your directionals would have a strobe effect. Spiderlite is the company to watch. They're hoping to release an LED that's brighter than OEM at Sigma this October.

Here's a thread that I posted a while back about the bulbs I use for the backup lights.
They work REALLY well.
I wanted to share some pics of the new diamond backup housing with the LED bulbs that I installed a few days ago.
There were pics of this housing in a thread about a week or so ago, but the thread poster didn't include pics with the bulbs on.
I wanted to show pics with them on because it creates a very cool effect due to the "diamond facets" that the housings have. It's hard to see the effect thru a pic but these are the best I was able to do.
You cannot tell in the pics, but the individual LEDs can be seen on the bulbs and look really sharp when lit up.
If you kept your original backup housing and didn't use the diamond cut one like I have shown, you will not be able to see the LED bulbs as the stock housing is opaque while this one is clear.
This is a pic of the bulbs I used, however please note that this bulb is NOT the correct one for our application. These are an "1156" and have a single contact point at the base. I had to send these back and exchange them for an "1157", which has dual contact points.
As you can see, they have multiple LEDs, 20 in all and are called Light Tower II. They turn on instantly, which works well with my LED tail lights. If anyone gets these bulbs, make sure you install them correctly. If they're installed the wrong way, they put out 1/2 the brightness.
It was one of those small details, but I noticed when I hit my fob and the approach lights turn on, the LED tails activate just *that* much quicker than the original backup bulbs.

Dang! If I had back-up lights that looked that good, I'd be looking for excuses to drive in reverse all the time! Like maybe when those pesky Miatas want to race...
