What does the traction control do you know that button on the console, I have really never turned it off, is anything lost or gained by turning it off.
If you turn it off you can really light up the tires. Otherwise you only get a little chirp before it stops them from spinning. I like to think of it more as a tire saver.
Traction control/active handling limits wheel spin in 2 ways. it actually throttles down the engine when it detects wheel spin and it also uses your emergency brakes to modulate wheel spin. It will keep you out of trouble when you run out of talent. If you have the TC/AH on and hold it down for 5 seconds the DIc will light up and say competitive driving. now you have turned off the throttle control and still have the wheel spin braking control on. Never turn it off when the roads are slick! I very rarely turn it off completely, usually comp mode is enough fun.
I actually run better in autocross with the traction control on on my Y2k FRC. Being an amature, it keeps the traction even and prevents me from getting out of shape while I learn to autocross. My FRC does not have a competition mode on the traction control - just on and off. Try it both ways and see what you think. The better the driver the less you need it.
Last time I turned off the traction control and punched it from a dead stop the car started going sideways until I backed off of the gas a little. Got to admit, it was a lot of fun.

Control is gained.
Last year after having a cam installed I ran a test. I used my HD video camera (60 frames per second) to get my 0-60 time. I got just under 4.2 seconds in competition mode (no traction control, see video below), and a full .5 second slower in the default (traction control on) mode. I would think that in the quarter mile this would slow you down .6 or .7 (assuming some loss for two shifts). So, that's the con.
