Default Lost Tool in Torque Tunnel

So I spent a great Sunday working on the car, including installing a Hurst shifter (seems great so far). Unfortunately during the install I lost an Allen wrench down the torque tunnel. I tried fishing it out with a magnetic wand but no luck, it had fallen to the passenger’s side and back a little and I couldn't even see it. So I buttoned everything back up in the hopes that it can't cause any serious damage and that it can be easily retrieved if it’s upon a lift. I'm going in for a transmission leak on Tues so will the stealership be able to get it out easily? Or can I retrieve it myself if it’s up on jack stands?

Thanks in advance for any help.

if you dont care about the allen wrench then just leave it there

I lost a sockers and a couple of screws about 3 years ago and have no problems...

dont waste your money going to the dealers they will say midsection of the exhaust and the tunnel plate must come out to retrive the tool, and I bet it will cost 300-400$ in labor

It will fall out after a while when it vibrates to the end of the close out panel.

Ya could see how fast the car stops 60-0 and find the Allen wrench at the same time. It'll slide right out the front.

Sounds like an excuse to install a new tunnel plate and remote clutch bleeder.

I did the same thing when I was installing my C6 Z06 shifter. I got it all taken apart and found that to remove the shifter you had to have a large torx head bit... which I didn't have. So, I went to borrow one from my neighbor and ended up dropping it down into the tunnel after removing only one of the bolts.

I couldn't put the new one in and I couldn't get the old one buttoned back up.

I then borrowed a telescoping magnet from him and after 20 minutes of blind fishing, finally got it.

Phew.

Won't hurt anything, and will most likly fall out on its own. Otherwise it does mean dropping the exhuast and tunnel plate. Not tough, but easier with a lift, and air tools. I'd forget about it, or I'd get Elite engineering's Tunnel plate and put that in, good excuse anyway

I did the same thing six and a half years and 33k miles ago. No problems so far. I'm sure it went out the back of the TT at some point. The roads here in Texas are littered with allen wrenches...

Default Thanks

Thanks all, I feel better about leaving it down there and letting it work itself out. Besides I'm sure the dealership will be more than happy to steal way more money than I would like to fix my bleeding transmission. If only I could just let that work itself out....

Thanks again, got to love the forum

Not ours, but it would have been nice to know you found it though by simply asking us first just to be sure.... Everyone's tools are accounted for here.

Done that. I just drove up a small incline (my driveway, at the time), slammed on the brakes and the tool fell out the back of the tunnel.

I had actually forgot about it till this thread occured...its still in the car....Firgured I would get up there and ask,, never did. I have only driven the car 112 miles all summer. Guess I was wrong about where it came from. It had been way over a year since the install of the blower and such when I did the ducts...more like two.
Me bad.....I give it to ya anywhay when I come back for more work...

Did the same thing three weeks ago when I installed the Hurst. (I read where you should stuff rags aroung the opening so you won't drop tools down there, but what kind of idiot would do that????????? ) Anyway I jacked up the rear, put jackstands underneath and climed under with a magnet pickup tool taped to a long metal rod and fished around for about 45 minutes till I was able to knock the tool into view from above and fish it out. What a fun day that was. Anybody working in there, do your self a favor and block off the opening before you start to work. Don't say you weren't warned!

Default 7/16" wrench did the same thing

I recently pulled my tranny and balanced my flywheel.... During the process I had to bleed the clutch system. Well after a track day and some good driving I decided it needed a little more bleeding. So I put it on jack stands pulled the exhaust and torque tube shield. I reached for the bleeder and BANG!!! a 7/16" wrench busted me in the nose. Somehow the thing held on for some 125+ trap speeds....

Gabe, we'll do a series of hard stops when you come up for Funfest! Better yet, did you get an appointment for any installs there?

not " tap dancing a bit"
not embarassed a bit. Only thing I feel bad about is forgetting about it for so long.....I was having fun with phil with the ITS MINE NOW....
I guess the truth is hard for some to believe...If DTE would have had their dyno day this spring,,I would have pimped phil about finding it....
Now,, I know its not his....wonder who lost it.

It was alomst two years after DTE did the work,,,,I am sure if it would have been from there, it would have been replaced by now. A 10 mm wrench is pretty common. If I had never installed the ducts, I would have never found it...

at least I aint a jerk and Phil knows that......just an forgetful sob...
