Default Front brakes squeal!

My front brakes squeal/squeak whenever I slow down and it's pretty damn embarassing. I checked the pads and they look good. Any recommendations??

They all do that. You could switch to a different pad. That would also cut down on all the brake dust.

Yeah, the brake dust gets on my nerves just as much. I'll look into ceramics.

Those are world class brakes. The brake dust and the squeaking are a trade off for supreme stopping power.I thought about changing the b.pads but changed my mind when I realized thered be a compromise in stopping ability.

I've got the same problem.. and my disclaimer here is, I haven't really solved it yet. I have stock pads and rotors. The problem is excessive brake dust generated by the Corvette's already-large pads and rotors. Here's what I've noticed:

- The brakes won't squeak after washing it, especially if you blast the hose into the front calipers really well. You'll probably see a lot of black oily crud come oozing out from under the Vette when you do this.

- The brakes won't squeak after some hard dashes from stop to 80MPH+. Not recommended for simply elimniating brake squeak.

- The brakes won't squeak (as much) after a nice hard stop or two.

All three points essentially "clean" the front rotors by water, centrifugal force, or by scraping them clean with the pads themselves. I bought a can of "anti-squeak" from AutoZ0ne, but hesitated against applying it since I had these horrible visions of corrosive chemicals fanning out from the wheels while driving, so now I just try and keep it clean. I often give it a quick blast from the hose before taking it out..

All that said, I'm currently biding my time before deciding on an upgraded caliper/rotor combo -- one that won't squeak, which I think is the only real solution. I may have to get headers before that though. Oh the decisions.

Has anyone else tried the anti-squeak, and does it work? Should Ryan and I just get new pads?

This has been common knowledge since the Z06 first came out. It is normal. If you don't want the amazing stopping power of this car then get ceramics, as others have suggested. But then you might as well just have gotten a C5 coupe or vert.

Yup, I only bought a Z06 to have brakes smaller than a stock '94 Cobra.

I got the ceramic DuraStops from Fred Bean (supporting vendor) and not a peep from the brakes since. Dust has DRAMATICALLY decreased as well.

Unless you track your car, I would recommend it to anyone.

LOL, you're just like me when I first bought my car! My brakes squeak too, it's completely normal. Buy ceramics if you want to eliminate the squeaking AND dust, but you'll lose a bit of braking performance. Probably nothing you'll noice on the street, though.

Hardly, and I mean hardly noticed the difference. Highly recommend them too.

do 2-3 really hard stops (almost into ABS) from 45-50mph, they will stop squealing for a few days.

Nope. I'm a realist. I just don't kiss *** here like everyone else.

I'll try what others said about the sudden stops and/or good brake cleaning. I don't want to have to change out the pads since they are basically new.

Trust me dude, nobody has "Cobra Brake Envy" on this board. Physics, physics, physics. Try to stop that overweight pig with smaller brakes, and dissapate the heat, and still have brake performance. Not possible. The brakes are big on that Cobra for a reason, too many pounds to pull down. Period. Sorry but face the brutal facts and get over it!

These methods might be a short, temporary fix, but the squeak will be back in no time. The stock brakes squeak, so either deal with it or switch to GM ceramics.

You could always opt out for Movit Ceramics..........even though they cost about as much as a new car.

Get some Hawk Blue pads and drive on street for two weeks. Every night, clay bar the car after washing to remove rotor filings AND brake dust before it FUSES to your wheels and paint.

After two weeks put your stock pads back on. You will be amazed by how quiet they are and how easy the dust cleans off.

Just get a set of ceramic pads like everyone else.
