The first time my column locked up was about 4 years ago when I came from Kentucky to New York to visit. About a week later it happened again. After returning to Ky., I installed a CLB and have had no problems. Now I live in New York State and last week went to Carlisle and did some sight seeing around the area. Upon my return to New York, I get the "remove key wait 10 sec" message. Next day, same thing. Now... is this car upset with me when it has to return to NY? It was born and raised in Kentucky and probably hates the North. Hmmm...
I was born an raised in Pa. so I can understand it's hatred for New York Just Kidding!
It's more likely a dirty resistor pellet on your key. Try cleaning it with some denatured alcohol. The "remove key wait 10 seconds" message is different than the "service column lock" message.

You are not kidding and you won't hurt my feelings if you say bad stuff about NY. I will try cleaning the key. Thanks for the tip.

This can also be caused by a weak battery. What is the condition of your battery? Long drives often bring batteries to a sudden death if they have a problem.

When you got this message were a lot of accessories on (like the blower for the AC/Heater)? I have been trying to narrow down when it happens to me (once or twice a year) and iy seems to be when the available current at startup time is lower than normal. Bill Curley had good luck eliminating electrical gremlins by cleaning all of the ground points on the car.
