Not that useful if you live in a state that includes the VIN on the registration document on the windscreen, or if you're required to display such by law, but, hey, if that helps stop them load it on a flat-bed, go ahead.

I went to a Chev dealership the other day to get a spare key cut and they asked me for my driver's license and the registration to the car. More than likely it is policy for all GM dealerships to ask for proof of ownership when getting keys cut.

I cut a slit in my registration sticker and put a small piece of plastic over the last half of my VIN. If I ever get any trouble over it I can simply pull the plastic out with a tab that I left hanging out of the slit. I also covered the last 1/2 of the VIN on the dash. I've had it that way for 2 1/2 years and 30 K miles with no problems.

Yes, this is now standard policy at GM Dealeships to thwart would-be car thieves! Amen!

I went to the dealership just last week and purchased a spare key. The only thing the parts guy asked me was if I wanted just a blank key or if I wanted him to cut it for me. He charged $45.00 for the key and the double cut.
There's no law in California anyway that says that your VIN has to be in plain view. There are also hidden VIN numbers stamped on several places on the vehicle. Usually somewhere on the bottom of the chassis and on a couple different spots on the frame. Different manufacturers place their hidden VIN's in different spots on the vehicle. The manual for the location of the hidden VIN numbers is sold to law enforcement personnel only. The manual is used extensively by auto theft investigators.
