Default NEED Help with Differential bought on fleabay.

Well I bought this thing and got it with a gouge where the rear connects to tranny. Will this wreck the seal? Please help as I'm not sure if I should open a complaint with Paypal. I'm very experianced Ebayer. Less experianced with rear differentials.

From the photo the gasket surface seems fine. You must remove any raised metal that will interfere with the gasket and/or the transmission flange. It looks like there is raised metal at the edge of the gasket surface.

CAREFULLY file it down to the level of the gasket surface. Use a very fine file. Run the file along the length and parallel to the gasket surface and NOT across (NOT inside to outside). The point here is to not create any fine lines that run from the inside cavity outward through which the fluid can seep out. I hope I am clear on what I am describing.

Your photo looks like the ad photo if you look closely you will see the same swipe mark on the side cover near the bolt flange in both photos. (Top of the ad photo and the left side of your photo) At least I think so.

However, is that a hairline crack radiating out from where the transmission output shaft enters? May not be a crack at all - only you yourself can only make that determination.

That dent is at the edge of the outer diameter. You've still got close to 100% gasket coverage. It will be fine. Just be sure there are no raised edges of metal created from the dent. If there are, just file them down, but be carefull not to file beyond flat.

I've never worked on differentials, but have on many water pumps, valve cover gaskets, intake gaskets, and other smaller gasketed automotive assemblies. I really think you'll be fine as long as you follow my advise.

Ron

Thanks guys. Getting it installed by Powerhouse Performance. He said it'll be fine. Was just freaked out when I opened the box and seen that. The box had a gouge very close to that area so thought it happened during shipment. Then I realized it looks more like a screwdriver pry mark. It should be fine and I appreciate your guys responses.

That should be no problem, the sealing area is not affected.
