Default key fob not working

so here is my story.

Yesterday my key-less entry fob was not working up to par, and I thought the battery might be going out. So I picked up a new battery, When I went to install the new battery, I noticed the rubber button pad was very dirty, so I gave it a good washing. I put everything back together.

I went to relearn the key fob to the car, and it would not work. I was at work at the time, so I thought I would wait until I got home to mess around with it. When I got home I got the key fob learned to the car right away.

But noticed that the "lock" button on the fob would not work. I can unlock the doors, but not lock the doors with the fob (I can lock with the button in the car, and the doors lock when I go over 10 mph, so I know the actual locks still work).

I took the fob back apart to check things out. And talked to some friends, they said there is some kind of carbon on the under side of the buttons, and that it might have been washed away when I cleaned the rubber.

And now I cant get the key fob to relearn to the car, cuz you have to press and hold "lock" and "unlock" to learn it, and my "lock" button does not work.

So...what do I do?

This is true. Take it apart and inspect it for carbon on all the buttons. (As a comparison) If the carbon is gone I don’t think you have any recourse other than replacement of the unit.

Try e-bay for a new fob. Keep the old one – most likely the electronics are good, but maybe not as you had trouble after the new battery install and before washing the rubber. Check for the carbon on the underside of the rubber to see if that is the problem.

I washed it before I installed the new battery, not after.

I did a test and looks like the curciut board works fine, but the rubber buttons are jacked up.

I looked on ebay for a new fob, and the 97-99 are expensive, and the 00-04 are cheap.

Since I dont need a new circuit board, can I just buy a 00-04 and put my circuit board in that (and use the plastic case and rubber button from the 00-04)?

My 97-99 fob has "passive" and the 00-04 do not. I don't use passive, and if I get a 00-04 case (with no passive), will that cause a problem?

I had a similar problem with mine recently....all buttons worked well except the door "unlock" button (the most frequently used). Last weekend, I opened the fob and cleaned the contact traces on the circuit board with a typing eraser. (Remember typewriters....?) It cleaned & polished them like new. Reassembled, and problem gone.
As long as the rubber button-pad is the same shape/size, you should be able to use one from another fob to replace the one in yours.
