My 02 Vert came stock with the Bose system cassette player head and the 12 disk changer in the trunk (poor option combo selection by the dealer IMHO). Can anyone tell me what would be involved in purchasing another Bose system CD head and replacing the cassette head with the new CD head? Is it advisable to do so? I'd like to keep the car as stock as possible and have never had any trouble with this equipment but since I never use the cassette feature and sometimes I would like to listen to a single CD once in a while without the hassle of accessing the unit in the trunk I thought it would be an easily reversible option. Is it a fairly simple task or should it be done by a "pro"? I've never worked on this car so I'm not too confident in my abilities to do so although I had a '78 that I readily took apart and put back together without a hitch. Can anyone advise? Thanks!

Its a pull and replace job. All wiring and connectors are the same from one to the other. You may be able to find a unit on Ebay at a good price. The only challenge at all is getting the console apart and, if you check the service manual, this is not a tough job at all.
Yes, been there, done that. The CD head unit is a direct replacement for the cassette unit, and both the in-dash single CD and the 12-disc changer work fine.
I just did the exact swap today. I bought a 2004 CD (from a popular auction site) removed at delivery (still had the plastic over the display with the code on it) for $110 and swapped it out. As long as you get the one with the connector for the changer, no problem. If you want any part numbers that I know for sure will work, pm and I'll get them for you. I got the instructions for removing the console and trim from the tech post section. If you have a vert, you'll need to remove the waterfall too. 4 screws, no sweat. Hardest part for me was worrying about scratching something, but it all went fine.
PS The part number I bought was 09390211. It's not marked, but the 5 button tells the changer to move to the next disk, that was the only real difference.
