Default C5 Air Box

Ok, been 3.5 weeks and I have not done any mods on my new 2003 coupe. I picked up a K&N filter and it came with a gasket to be installed in the air box.

1. Is it necessary or is everyone running with just the filter and no gasket?

2. How do you get the air box out. Do you have to remove the hood? I have looked on the web and can not seem to find instructions on pulling the air box for replacement (or to put this gasket in). I don't want to "manhandle" my mistress... she disserves tender handling as everyone knows.

3. Thoughts on a cold air replacement. I am a BIG K&N fan. Want to stay with that filter. Is there a system that anyone would recommend using K&N to replace the stock air box?

i'm a bit confused, did you buy the filter that drops in your stock air box or did you buy the cone style filter/cold air that replaces the stock box?,you do not need to remove the hood for any of that.

I had to put that part in my air box. The K&N is thinner than the stock air filter so the piece is needed to fill the space.

I have this K&N set up on miine and love it! I also cut out the shroud underneath the filter(the same size and shape) to allow plenty of cool air into it and it seemed to feel crisper even after I initialy put it on!

http://www.madvet.com/shop?frame=2.135.2

It's not hard to pull the old one off, you can pull up the clips on the top of the stocker and pull the old filter out.
Then to remove the whole box go around to the front of the Vette and you'll see there in the front of the filter housing are two tabs w/rubber inserts, then you'll need to get a flat bar or screwdriver and just pry towards the motor to pop it off the tabs also unclamp the air bridge from the Tb, the bridge will come off the same way you'll see two tabs on top of the radiator shroud w/rubber inserts, just pry slightly up to pop them off the posts they sit on. Now you can disassemble as desired to install the new airbridge and K&N FIPK set up!

Hope this helps! I can take some pic's of mine if you'd like just e-mail me at madmatt9471@sbcglobal.net

Thanks,Matt

I have the K&N filter and it was just a direct swap...didn't need to use the gasket on my '02.

Hi Logansar -

RE: How do I remove the airbox....

You have to remove the electrical connection to the maf - there is a little grey plastic locking clip on it, pull that clip out and then the plug pulls out.

Then loosen the clamp on the throttle-body to airbridge, and pry up the buttons on the two plastic retainers on either side of the airbridge and pull them up and out.

Then, with the hood fully open (I lay towels over the nose of the car for this step) reach your hands down between the airbox and the front crossmember of the car, working from in front of the open hood, putting your hands down in the gap between the hood and the front fascia.

Pry the airbox toward the engine with your hands until the airbox lid pops off of the studs on the crossmember.

Then walk around to the engine and pull the whole airbox/maf/airbridge assembly out of the engine bay.

Sounds like a lot of work - in reality it takes 5 minutes and once you do it the first time, you understand how the box is mounted.

best regards -

Default It's easy, just did it!

Method I used to swap my stock '99 air box with a '04 Z06 air box.
