Has anyone made a trunk center compartment cover to hide all the misc. items that ends up in the trunk, windex, paper towels, tools, etc. Any details, pattern, etc. appreciated. I know you can buy one but I think I can build one a lot cheaper. Thanks.
you sure can. just need some mdf and carpet to cover and you are set. If you want for added functionality, you can buy the center cover locks/fastner from the dealer(dont remember how much they cost, or the part number) and cut the slots out for those as well.
You can get everything from Ken Fichtner. They can provide a complete kit so you can add all of the covers (left, center, right). Most dealers don't know what side covers to order (Convertible Vs Coupe) and do not know which fasteners to order that adapt the car so you can fasten the new covers. On the coupe the fasteners are part of the rear body so they are not listed in the GM parts book. Ken's people have spent the time to figure it all out.
I made all 3 covers from plywood and covered it in matching carpet. They look factory and work great. Also helped deadened some of the sound. Plus they can be easily removed when going to the track.
I used 1/4" masonite with a couple of wooden ribs underneath to strengthen it and covered in matching carpet. I also added a piano-type hinge across the lid about 6" from the rear edge so I can retrieve things from undrneath without having to move the cover. I originally did this so if I wanted to change CD's i wouldn't have to lift the cover, but I never installed a changer. However, it has proven convenient many times when the trunk was full of luggage. I had most of the stuff lying around so the only thing I had to buy was the hinge at Home Depot.
Thanks for all your comments. They are much appreciated. Stripper, That's what I was thinking. I have some 1/4" masonite laying around and was also planning on using ribs for stength and to also position the cover. The hinge is a good idea. Thanks.

I have been planning to make some covers for my Z with carbon fiber laminate. Should be very light, strong & look cool. Will post pics when they are finished
