Default question about airfilter

OK I have a dumb question guys...

The last C5 I owned I only had for 2k miles so never really needed to do anything to the car.

I want to remove the air filter to check on its condition. I found the 2 retaining clips and opened them but not sure how to get the air filter this out of there.

Also what about K&N on a vette? I use it on my trucks in the past any feed back on this? I want do some simple mods that will get me a little bang for my buck as it were.

It has an after mkt exhaust already and slotted rotors. Rest is bone stock

Also the engine compartment is kind of dusty / dirty. Can I hose this thing down without causing any problems.

I know my old C4 this was a very bad idea because of the placement of the coil pack in the front of the engine.

How about using Amoral on it to make it look nice?

Thanx

CJ

Check this thread out: it doesnt really have anything to do with your situation, but it has a good picture i took a few months ago.
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...ight=air+cover

Once you go here, look at the picture. see the block thing that says "ter" (in the top left of the picture)...anyways, after you have undone the 2 clamps/straps, you pull the thing that says "ter" straight up and out of there. The filter will come with it. Simply reverse the process to install a new filter. Its kind of a pain but it gets the job done.

As for K and N filter, Im not really sure. Most people go with an aftermarket intake altogether (blackwing is a good example), if you want a few pony pick up, a stock look, and not have to worry about hydrolock, buy a 2004 Z06 cover and put it in place of the original. It has a bigger opening in the front that lets more air in. Also most people just use a paper filter which helps prevent dirt and crap from getting into the motor. Those k and n filter let more air in by having larger holes in the filter material...obviously bigger holes mean more dirt. Ive also heard that the oil used on the material can mess with the mass air sensor and screw things up...IMHO, its not worth the tiny amount of HP youll get back, just go with a paper filter and a z06 cover. If you want a real gain, go with a blackwing, vararam, or one of the other ones...

I have a picture (but ill have to find it) of the difference between regular vette and z06 air covers.

You have to be careful about hosing it down...there are two sensors under the intake manifold where water will settle and screw them up. Pressure washing is the main cause...i cant remeber what the actual sensors are though...

I used amoral on it once or twice and it made everything nice and black...i used it very sparingly though...as i didnt want mass amounts of that crap everywhere.

I agree, I went with 2002 Z06 Cover and paper filter. If it is good enough for a 405 HP car, it is good enough for mine!

Where is a good place to gget the Z06 cover with out paying dlr prices?

Got a part number so I can look around?

If you can find the picture that would be cool. the local dlr said $105 for this part. ouch..

Will it allow that much more air in that its worth it or how much is a good after mkt air box?

Here's the link to Ken F's site (supporting vendor) for the Z06 airbox cover, think the ac delco filter is about $12.00, somewhere else on the site.
