Default Smoother ride?

I want a smoother ride in my 2002 C5 with stock suspension, y2ks with runflats and Z06 swaybars.

I want to decrease the thud sound when hitting bumps on these terrible tampa roads and smoothe things out more.

I know the runflats are a problem but how much of a difference will it make just changing to non-runflats. I ask because I am thinking the rear tires may be too low profile and I'll never really tone down the rough ride on poor roads.

I was thinking of doing a 17" all the way around rim deal like 17x9 front and 17x11 rear with 315/35 but I don't want ZR1 rims. I'd love Y2K style or Magnesium rims in this combo with light wheel weights.

Is this too much to ask?

Just get rid of the runflats.

I just picked up a set of GS-D3 and without a doubt they are a HUGE improvement over the runflats.

Runflats are a major part of the problem with the harsh ride you are having.

I've said this at least a dozen times - the GY EMT is one of the most mis-understood tires on the planet.

It rides hard, and transmits noise into the cabin because of exceptionally stiff sidewalls. It has these extremely stiff sidewalls because it is the only tire made that will allow you to drive your car at reduced speeds for up to 200 miles with zero air pressure. It has to have these extremely stiff sidewalls so that the tire doesn't roll off the rim.

If you are willing to sacrifice this run-flat capability, then by all means go to a non-run flat. Be prepared to repair your tire roadside if you ever get a flat, or else make sure that you always have cell phone coverage and AAA and a lot of patience to wait for the flat bed.

I have non run flats and I'm happy with them. They are MUCH quieter. I'm just trying to point out both sides of the issue. Good luck.

One other trick to try before you buy new tires. Find someone to give you a ride in a C3 or C4. After you get out, you will think your ride is like a Caddy, even with the run flats on.
