Default Runflats

I am starting to shop around for some new tires for my 02 with 18k miles. I am keeping runflats for several reasons, so any suggesstions for non runflats will fall on deaf ears.

I am also considering getting new wheels. Chrome Cray's or Chrome C6 Z06 reproductions are my current choices. If I go with new wheels I am going to step up to the 18"/19" C6 sizes.

What I have discovered in my search for Goodyear EMT's is a little strange to me.

I checked with Tire Rack as I like to use supporting vendors if possible. The info below was taken from a magazine and then confirmed on Tire Racks website.

Stock C5 Goodyear Eagle F1 GS EMT's
P245/45 YR-17 are $332 ea.
P275/40 YR-18 are $414 ea.

Stock C6 Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-2 EMT's
P245/40 YR-18 are $256 ea.
P285/35 YR-19 are $257 ea.

It just seems odd that there is such a huge difference in price for the C6 second generation runflats compared to the C5 runflats.

Has anyone switched to the Goodyear C6 runflats on a C5? If so, any comments on the switch?

The new runflats are only good for 100 miles verses the old runflats 200 miles. It is a cheaper tire to make. Believe it or not it is also smaller, see below:

Here are the widths from Tire Rack:
The C5 OEM Goodyear runflats are EXTREMELY WIDE for their size. The tread width is even wider than the 295 Z06 tires, here are the specs (tread width)
-C5 Goodyear F1 GS EMT (275) 10.3 inches
-Goodyear Z06 (295) 10.2 inches
-Firestone (275) 8.6 inches
-Goodyear F1 GS D3 (275) 9.4 inches
-C6 Goodyear F1 GS-2 EMT (285, 19 inch diameter) 9.2 inches

The distance thing is not a factor to me. Also, if you read the Goodyear brochure included with the owners manual you'll see that if runflats are driven at 0 pressure for more than 50 miles they are not repairable.

The 100 or 200 miles will keep you from getting stranded somewhere but the tire will need replacement according to Goodyear.

I didn't think the stock C6 runflats came in the stock C5 sizes.

They don't. Not yet anyway. Rumor has it that Goodyear may expand the second generation runflats to C5 sizes.

Buy the Goodyear GS D3's and buy the road hazard. Comes with 24/7 roadside assistance...a better ride...and CHEAPER.

I don't think we should "hold our breath" waiting for this to happen...

I'm with you. For a variety of reasons, I stayed with the runflats and bought the C5 Goodyears again. Much of the reason that I didn't go with the C6 tires is just the decision to stay with my current 5 spoke C5 high polished wheels that I like the appearance of. I have run both the runflats and non runflats and you can come up with reasons for either way but the stock C5 ones are the best for me.

Take a look at the Michelin Piot Sport Zero Pressure tires. I think they handle better, are quieter and I know they are cheaper than the Goodyears.

After having been stuck at a time and place you would not want to be with a non-runflat, I would not consider putting on non-runflats. If I planned to track the car, I would obtain separate wheels/tires for that purpose.

No one threw kumho RF's out there ? worth a look at half the price, that is probably what I will go with next time I need tires, due to the cost .. if price was not an issue, I think I would get the michelin zero pressure RFs

Don't put your head in the sand. There are OTHER brands of run flats out there. The Goodyear C5 run flats have been around a long time and have a very stiff sidewall to provide the 200 mile range. Michelin, Firestone, Kumho offer C5 size run flat tires that are comparable in spec to the newer, softer riding and quieter C6 run flats that you mentioned. If you want to keep your existing wheels, explore purchasing one of the competitive brands in C5 size that are less expensive and better riding. There have been lots of reports on these competive entries posted on the forum.

If you want new wheels, it appears that there is a major subsidy to get C6 size run flats based on the tire savings of the C6 versus C5 Goodyears.
