Default Service Column Lock ?

Today jump in, start and DIC says to remove key for 10 seconds. So I do, put key back in start and says SERVICE COLUMN LOCK. SHOOT! So I try to turn the wheel and nothing, no go its rock solid. I remove the key and try again... no problem what so ever, I'm off to the races.

Ideas? Have no idea if the previous owner had the locked serviced or not. Thanks guys for your input.

Thanks but still have questions.

How can I tell if the prior owner already took care of this?

Is it common for the column to lock, take out key and clear the problem?

Check your battery and connections. That will sometimes cause it.

Read thru the "Steering Column Lock FAQs", also when this happened to me, I pulled the two fuses out (in the sticky) and was just fine after reinstalling them. I have the CLB from Corvettes of Houston for installation if it gets out of hand but hasn't happened again in 9 months. Check the fuse box on passenger side and look for corrosion as water can slip in from the battery compartment when you wash your baby. Did you have a low battery lately or is your battery a bit old? This will cause the warning.

If your steering wheel locks you obviously don't have the latest recall performed on your car. The latest recall entails the steering column lock plate removed and also a K harness installed, which has proven to be defective.
You'll need to get your steering column unlocked first, then install the CLB and don't take your car back to the dealer for this issue.

I've also read other peoples' remarks to the effect that they have it on hand, keep it in their glovebox, etc., in case the problem arises. Maybe it's just me, but I don't get it. Having recently installed my CLB from COH (works perfectly BTW), this is not something I'd want to be doing in haste, late at night, alone in a parking garage, while it's raining, and so forth. And Murphy's law tells me the problem will strike at the most inopportune time....
While not hard per se, if you haven't done it before and are not familiar with the procedure, you'll want to take your time, so as not to break all those little plastic parts and pieces. I also needed a trouble light to see things clearly.

Turn the ignition key off and take the key out. If you can turn thr wheel about a full half turn or more you have the CLB already installed.
If not get it and install it.
