Saw the other post talking about issues with the Hurst, but I have a different issue and not sure if it's normal or not.
I had the Hurst installed at Corvettes at Carlisle last month, since then I have noticed more road noise coming from the shifter area. Not rattles or squeaks, but actual road noise; is this normal with aftermarket shifter?
Is there more sound insulation or a gasket that is on the stock unit that keeps out the noise that is not on the Hurst unit?
Hope this doesn't sound crazy, but before I called the installer I fiqured I would post it here. My wife even asked if I had done something to the exhaust, because the Vette sounded different, it is the interior noise from the shifter area.
I love the shifter and it's movement, very sharp and crisp; just don't like the added noise in the cockpit.
As I recall, there is a rubber boot on the stock shifter that has to either be cut or rolled inside out to fit the Hurstl. I did not cut mine and used the inside out method. Once installed, another rubber insulator is bolted down to the tunnel. You should not notice a lot of road noise. I do get a small bit of rattle vibration under hard hard acceleration but this is due to the fact I have a stock shift **** from Vette Essentials. When I had my heavier billet **** installed, I got no noise.
I wonder if the installer left the rubber boot off or cut yours to fit. Just a guess. Good luck with it.
I too noticed an unwanted noise after the installation. One thing I noticed was with the stock shift handle had the noise, but then I switched to my momo shifter and it made it much quieter since I tightened it down closer to the boot (much quieter means pretty much back the way it was - quiet). Before the momo I was going to look into the little trick that others use which is to install a rubber piece that eliminates the sound, but the momo did the trick. I am sure someone will post pics or info on the rubber piece you can use.
When I installed my Hurst shifter a few years ago, there was a very fine write-up on the install on the Forum.
Part of the installation was going to Home Depot and buying a 3 or 4 inch black rubber cap (the kind you use to cap off a pipe). I cut a hole in the middle and slid it over the shaft (no inuendo meant here...) - it fits very tight against the tunnel and the shaft. I have had no road noise through this setup.
Maybe Corvettes at Carlisle know of such a setup? Maybe somebody who lives near you could help you fix the problem or recommend someone who can?

Pretty easy fix. Go to Home Depot and get a 3 inch plastic pipe block off. It is made of rubber. Cut a hole the size of the shifter in the middle of it and slide it down over the shifter and into the opening of the factory rubber boot. Fits very tight and no noise.
Just my .02 but I bought one of these last week and the 2" was the size that seemed most correct. I think it was about $2.64. Oh yeah, it didn't fix the problem.
When I installed my Hurst shifter, I kept the stock boot and trimmed it to fit tightly around the base of the shifter. No noticeable road noise. I drove it for awhile without the console or the boot, and there was a big increase in the noise from the tunnel.
