I've always understood the definition of a "small block" in the Chevy world to be an engine with a bore center-to-center measurement of 4.40 inches. It is this dimension's use that qualifies the Gen III LSx engines to qualify as "small block"s regardless of their displacement, compression ratio, whatever.
