I took a semi-long trip yesterday, and after about 45 minutes of highway driving, the fuel gauge dropped from almost full to completely empty. The low fuel warning came on, even though I know I had a practically full tank. After a few hours of the car sitting, I started her up again and the fuel gauge was fine, showing just over 3/4 full. Again after about 40 minutes of highway driving the same problem occured. Any ideas?
Maybe a ground problem?
HELP!
P.S. Today ok, but I only drive about 10 miles to work.
You're probably experiencing what many others have. Get a bottle of Techron and add it to your next tank. The sulphur buildup tends to make the gas gauge go nuts.
Im not 100% sure, but I think that Walmart DOES carry that.
SInce we are on the subject...I ALWAYS gas up at Chevron with Premium grade (which has Techron additives), do I still need to buy a bottle of Techron every once in a while?
I'm not sure if Wallyworld has it, but auto parts stores do. It's Chevron Techron. According to their website, Advance Auto has it. Pepboys, Autozone, etc...probably do as well.

I got a bottle of Techron from Wal-Mart. You also might want to switch brands of gas and see if that helps.
Thanks! just taking a peep on the forum, and Bingo! You all are explaining how to fix the lastest little prob i'm haveing with my '01. At 3 dif. spots on the gage(1/2, 1/3, 1/8) neddle drops to E. Then I have to clear the code while driving, and it pops rite back where it's supposed to be. I'll have to pick some of that up on the way home. Got a Pont. Montana doing it too. Thankyou!
You are probably have a better chance to find it at an automotive store....Napa, Oreilly, etc. I just got back from Wal-mart about 15 min ago and I looked to see if I could find a bottle of Techron...(Doesnt mean they dont carry, could have been out today, but just FYI.
Good luck on getting it worked out...
How about the question I asked? Does filling up with Premium grade at Chevron exclude us from having to buy a bottle every once in a while?
There are a number of possibilities
1. fouling of sender ... use a good fuel sytem cleaner like Cheron Techron, SeaFoam, Valvoline Synpower or Chemtool B-13
Follow that up with a Brand of gasoline with a beter detergency package
see www.toptiergas.com
2. A bad ground connection
3. a faulty sending unit.
I have this problem too. Everytime I fill it up the needle goes dead, but sure enough when I get down to about half a tank, it comes right back. I've ran several bottles of Techron through to no avail.
I had the same fuel gauge problem lastnite, i'm headed to pepboys for some Techron. I hope this works, heaven knows i don't want to take it to the dealer!!
