I took my 2000 to the dealer today to have it looked at for the 'Service Console Lock' message. Thay just called a few minutes ago and said that i need a BCM (body control module). They said it would cost me $550. If i get the CLB, do i need to replace the BCM. I just spent $500 on a new glass top. Money is a little tight. Thanks!
Sounds like the stealership is trying to take you for a ride. Is it the "service column lock" message? I'd try the CLB first, since it's only fifty bucks. No, you don't need to replace the BCM when installing a CLB.
Get your car away from the dealer. Do a search here on the Forum for Column Lock and you'll find a ton of posts concerning this issue. The column lock has been an ongoing problem with many Corvette owners suffering the consequences. GM has had two recalls, but neither has resolved the problem. What is of particular concern about your situation is that the dealer certainly knows, or should have known about this very common problem and the fact there are two well publicized recalls and they are trying to sell you something.
Again, get your car out, read the posts and purchase the Column Lock Bypass. $50.00 bucks and 15 minutes will prevent the problem from ever happening again. Good Luck.
They said that the 'BCM' was not covered in the recall or bulletin. Someone please let me know. Thanks.
Listen to what everyone is saying....run away from the dealer and order a Column Lock Bypass from Corvettes of Houston or Thunder Racing for about $50. It takes about 30 minutes to install. This will save you from the dreaded column lock!
I think it needs to be unlocked to install it. Turn the key on shake the wheel hard from side to side, key off, side to side, on, etc... it should unlock. Have the CLB ready to go. Takes no time to install.
I just had mine done 2 days ago. There is a second recall that came out Feb 8, 2006. It's in effect until 2008. The dealership has to pay for it. Show them this recall they are responsible for fixing it. They will install the Harness Kit, Strg Whl Theft Dtrnt Lk Shorting for free.
If it does lock up this weekend. Can i install the CLB and unlock it?
Is your steering wheel locked now? Has it ever actually locked? Order the bypass for $50.00 & install it yourself. Order it next day shipping - if needed ASAP. The sooner the better.
It is not locked up yet. My issue is that they are saying that the problem is the BCM (body control module). Not he harness kit, etc.... Does anyone know what else that BCM controls will i run into other issues if in fact that part is bad. Please let me know.
