air flow honker
I just had mine put on with full exhaust and a tune. So I wouldnt be able to tell you how it ran without the tune.
The PCM doesn't "reset itself", per se, to adjust for increased airflow. Airflow is monitored by the Mass Air Flow Sensor and its output is provided to the PCM on a continuous basis. The PCM uses this info, along with continuous output of the coolant temperature sensor, the inlet air temperature sensor, the manifold pressure sensor, engine RPM sensor, and the oxygen sensors to provide optimum fuel injector pulse width for the appropriate air-fuel ratio. In other words, the PCM will recognize the additional oxygen available and add the precise amount of fuel required.
"Tuning" changes the values in the calibration maps to provide more aggressive (leaner) air-fuel mixture. Tuning can allow for more power after installing the Honker, however, it isn't mandatory.
The PCM is designed to do some "learning" in order to differentiate between temporary driving conditions and actual long term conditions. Usually, the effects of the learning process are very subtle, and not noticeable, seat-of-the-pants-wise. The process is usually completed in 100 to 200 miles.
