I have an 01, A4 with a K&N Filter and Z06 air box. Has anyone taken the screen out of the MAF and does it help at all? Also by removing the MAF screen will that throw an engine code?

I think it might be better to leave it screened and put in a cold air intake; not justa little bigger hole in the stock one. (Z06).
I was going to do that and was talked out of it; so I put in a Vararam.
Can't get that kind of performance by taking out a screen! Good luck!
By the way mine is an '01 A4 also.
I took mine out of my 99, it did not throw any codes. I took it out so when I sprayed my dry nitrous shot it would not freeze up. If your not spraying, I would leave it alone, there was no SOTP gain.
What I did and other forum members have done is install a new MAF housing a larger one and it will increase the flow and throttle response! But the real restriction is the LS1 manifold which is why I'm also going to an LS6 manifold in order to compliment the rest of my combo!

I think it has been said enough, but don't do it. I have an 03Z (which comes with no screen) I recently replaced that one with a newer screened version due to a lot of times after adding a CAI to either an 02,03, 04 Z you will get lean bank codes (0171 and 0174) due to the extra air from the CAI not getting metered. The screen ensures all air is metered, maybe that's the reason that only them 3 yrs and only on the Z's were they screenless, every other yr including the C6Z's have screens.
The MAF sensor for the LS1 GenIII motor is common to many GM models that have the same engine. In models where the air flow comes from the side or makes a turn in before the MAF the screen helps smooth and straighten the air flow. In the C5, the air flow is straight on from the front and the screen is not necessary but to remove it for just the vette LS1s would be a production hassle for GM. The Z06 doesn't have the screen because the LS6 is a different production run. No screen helps. Removing the screen is a recommended performance mod for C5s. The screen helps in no way shape or form, that little thing is absolutly no restrictor!! If it was a great big/thick screen maybe you could say it was a restrictor, but it's not. And if it was "better" then there wouldn't only be 3 cars with it (02-04Z) What's in the new C6Z?. And you are VERY true that was GM's thinking was that only cars that had "curves" before the MAF needed it. And seeing as how Mr. Halltech realized this problem along with MANY other Z owners. Now, granted, some people can probally get away with it, or a "tune" could hide it. I have spent the last month myself troubleshooting my SES light......... and guess what, the new screened MAF fixed it. Read this........
And there are 100's more that I found while looking for an answer to my old problem. Many other people even in this thread agree to NOT remove it, due to air metering.
