...it's completely normal operation. I just checked mine a few minutes ago when I moved it. If anything were amiss, it'll give an indication or pop your GFI circuit.
The heat shouldn't be enough to even scorch a surface, but I keep mine on a hard non flammable surface just in case.
Just hooked mine up two weeks ago, works PERFECT.(so far) Warm to the touch but not hot. I set it on a piece of ceramic tile. Had some dead batt problems. Car sets for weeks at a time (I know, its a shame) replaced batt with red top and got a batt tender. that should take care of it, I hope.

The harder it is working, the warmer it gets. Fairly warm while red light is on or flashing and solid green. Flashing green is float charge and it is not as warm. It's electronic and will be warm as long as it has power to it. It should never be too warm to handle. (Make sure it is getting plenty of ventilation.)
