dont get me wrong, HUD is kinda cool, but i think GM could have done better..
like, how about a round digital tach. thats it. just a tach. which would show the redline, and maybe a shift light. now that would be cool.
i have it on most of the time,, but usually just so that i can barely notice it,,at its 'dimmest' position (which changes obviously depending on light).
the 'slide' tach that it displays now, brings me back to my '87 digital dash
I love my HUD, although I don't use the tach. The tach is on, but when I'm looking at hitting redline I use the analog on the dash, it's more accurate. BTW, the HUD does have a shift light.
I like mine just fine... as do others who don't know what a HUD is.
Have you tried aftermarket? I've seen LCD screen in-dash installs with laptop computers that run programs to show the tach and speed, as well as other engine diagnostic measures.
I think the slide tach keeps with the uncluttered functionality of the HUD. Let's face it, if you start putting round gauges of everything up there, there'd be too much to look at....

GM has done better, in fact the HUD's on C6's do have a round tach now and also a G meter, which may be a novelty, but cool to me! Keep in mind that the current HUD in your C5 was developed a decade ago when most cars didn't(and still don't) have!
