CLB question
`98 auto....do I need the dealed CLB or can I install the aftermarket bypass. Do I need both? I know this topic is all over this board, I just want to do it right, the first and only time. Thanks for your replys.

Call Corvettes of Houston. Fifty bucks and about half an hour is all you need. You don't need to take it near the stealership. I have a '98 MN6 and have had no lockups since I installed the CLB last year.

Get the aftermarket CLB - has worked fine on my car for well over 3 years.

The dealer will remove the locking plate and place a K-harness to bypass the computer glitch.
For A4 cars only:
1997-2000 A4's
Install wire kit (Harness K), remove and discard lock plate, install the "cam orientation plate" where the lock plate previously resided. No PCM flash required.
2001-2004 A4's
No Change Required - they didn't install the Electric Column Lock (ECL) on those years, in the U.S., after experiencing so many problems.
Q I have an A4 car; what should I do if I get a recall notice from GM?
A This is a personal decision. My advice is to have the recall implemented. They will service your car per the above recall discussion. After the recall is implemented on A4's, you should be able to turn your steering wheel with the key removed. The only anti-theft mechanism now will be your A4 transmission will remain locked until the key is ON.

I had a CLB on my '98 A4 several years ago. I had sporatic "pull key, etc, etc." problems w/ it.
When the recall came out which involved removing the pin on the lock plate (or whatever) I jumped all over it. I removed my CLB and had the dealer install the "fix". I think that was atleast 4 or 5 years ago. Since the dealer "fix" I've had zero problems w/ the column lock.
As far as my experience w/ the dealer recall fix is concerned, I'm very satisfied and pleased....
