Well, I am the ignorant guy and the stupid question is as follows;
My DD 2000 coupe is having an erratical behavior temperature wise.
While in movement the temp is basically hoovers in the middle of the gauge, but as soon as I hit an stop and go situation start to climb significantly well over the 220 degrees, then go back and forth regardsless of driving situation.
Fluid is OK, belts are properly tensed, car has 80K and from my modest understanding should be a bad thermostast or a defective water pump.
Can anybody tell me if I am correct in my assumptions? Is the water pump an easy fix for a weekend mechanic?
I don't know about the water pump being a simple fix but the thermostat is. Best way to do it would be to find someone who has changed one out and took detailed pics of the process or someone who has your year service manuals that can scan those pages in and email them to you. And since you are just south of me if you decide to do it yourself and need a hand just send me a PM and I will be glad to help you out. Good luck in getting this problem fixed.
First - get it on a set of ramps on the front wheels or jack the front and set it on stands and then look in under the front bumper up into the radiator shroud. Clean all the mung out from between the radiator and the shroud. Then take it for a spin and see it that helps. Often, the radiator is clogged and air can't get through to cool it.
Two things come to mind. One-our radiators get covered with debris from the air dam under the front. Jack up the car and take a peek, you may be surprised at what you find. Two-with hood up and car running, turn on A/C. The fans should come on, if they don't have them checked out. Since your car doesn't run hot while moving I doubt that it is a pump or thermostat problem, and the above mentioned problems will cause overheating in stop and go traffic. By the way there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers sometimes.
