Do a search, from what I've read there have been no problems with colour. I took mine off after one year. You can not tell. Machine silver.

I was concerned too, and I DID have a faint darker line where the BSM's had been...
BUT, I'm sure that I am the only one who saw the "shadow" (since I was so concerned about the possibility of there being a shadow, I was almost looking for it), and the shadow COMPLETELY blended in with the rest of the paint after a couple washes and a few weeks of being in the sun periodically.
Do NOT let the idea of there being a paint difference keep you from removing the BSM's if you [he] wants to -- everything will be fine in the not-so-long run.

Took mine off after 2+ years. She was kept outside A LOT at the time too.
Looks a lot better. No signs of a difference. If there was initially (I cannot remember), it was gone quickly!

Mine is an 04 with 17k miles that I just removed them a few weeks ago. Check out the lowest picture on my website for a good look at the "post BSM removal" area.
I noticed very slight discoloration, but you'd never notice it in passing, and I already cannot see it after a good and thorough polish. Tell him to go for it!
I removed mine last week and only wish I had done it sooner. I have an 03 and it's been out in the sun for long periods of time, no discoloration. Tell your buddy to do it, he will not regret it.
I removed mine as well and there is a shadow where the bsm once rested. I have already put the car away so I won't be able to tell if it disappears until next year but I am sure a good detail job can make sure it's gone. But it seems only noticeable to me cause I know those damn things were there to begin with. I hate those BSMs
My car is an 02, bsm's on the car since day one. I recently hit a deer, and installed a new wheel well, and drivers side front 1/4 panel. After seeing the car with the bsm on the door, but not on the engine bay exhaust duct(whatever its called), I liked the look so much that last night I removed the passanger side molding in that area as well. I used a blowdrier and fishing string, after removing it, I just rubbed the tape/glue off with my finger so as not to scratch the paint, then I hit the area lightly with Awsome grime remover, then hit that with meguiares cleaner wax, then hit that with Zaino. The paint looks perfect, no fade, no glue marks, and since the door bsm's are beveled they look great.
If you're concerned about light fade, take off one of the short front quarter moldings and check the surface. If there's any problem, just stick it back on. The only color I've heard recurring issues with is MY, and that may be the tint coat.
