So I was looking around and everyone is telling me gears run around 1500. I am just wondering is this for the whole differential or something? Comming from the Mustang world when someone says gears they mean just the ring and pinion not the whole diff. Why is it different with vettes? Just curious. I mean can't I just swap in a ring and pinion? Is there a downside to doing this?
Yes, it's for the whole diff setup. C5s are IRS cars not solid axle. When you do gears in this type of setup you better know exactly wtf you're doing. It's better to just buy a built one to save you the headaches. Not saying it can't be done...just probably not worth the effort.

I see so how hard is the diff swap? I've always brought my car in for a ring and pinion change just not that familiar with a IRS Setup
I had mine done within 2 days. There is a write up on it. You have to drop the drivetrain from torque tube to rear end. Not sure if you have an automatic, but I put in a new vigilante torque converter while it was all apart. Also, autos need to have the shift points adjusted. If your running 2:73's w/ auto you will be amazed with the difference. Do a search. There is a bunch of information already here. Also you can sell your old diff to recover some cost. Good luck.
