I just purchased some used body side moldings they are black and I intend to spray them myself went to the paint store and purchased the paint (Spiral Grey) and the clear, I've never sprayed metallic before any tips I need to know? I sanded them down with 320 and removed all the old tape so they are ready. Plan to use a gravity touch up gun.
Why would you ever put them back on. It looks so much better without and was the way the engineers all wanted the vette to look. The money men found a cheap addition to charge you out the assssss to make more money for GM.
I kinda agree with you, you see I originally purchased this car for my wife and as most women she seems to spend a lot of time at the local mall, I'm thinking I would rather have a little protection, evan when I drive it I always try to park way away from everybody and it almost never fails I return to find somebody parked right next to me.

Sand the mouldings down with 800 grit and get yourself some single stage paint or basecoat clearcoat.
You'll need less than 1/2 pint but I doubt you'll be able to buy any amount any smaller.
Lay 2 medium coats of basecoat on the mouldings, let the basecoat flash for about 20 minutes and apply the clear. Two coats of clear and you'll be done.
Don't be in a hurry to put the clearcoat on too thick. Even smooth lighter coats (3 if really light) will make it so you don't run the clear.
Go find a automotive paint supplier in your area bring your vin number and they will be able to mix up what you need I didn't want mine in a spray can but I believe they can do it. I got mine at ( Paintin Place) here in the high desert
Don't let em talk you out of it if you want them. I would buy and add them if I didn't already have them. I won't get into the arguments over yes and no, but the engineers intentions is a silly one. They didn't intend them to have chrome wheels or to be lowered or lots of other things either. It's your car, if you like them add them, if you don't take them back off. Personally, I'm impressed with your willingness to do your own painting and try it out. Post pictures when you finish.

I love my BSM. And i love spiral gray it's my favorite color.

I paid a whopping $75 for the moldings as an option. I wouldn't call that paying out of the ***, especially for a little protection.

When I took the old tape off the BSM I measured the thickness which was about .040 I was able to find a whole roll of the stuff about 50 feet for $9.00 on e-bay its made by 3M its grey in color the roll I purchased is 5/8" wide I should have got 1/4" or 3/8" had to trim the width a little, As for positioning the moldings I got measurments from a few vetts with them already installed, did'nt get a chance to take pics today will try thursday by the way I paid 100.00 for these used from somebody on this forum which is a heck of a good deal, the chev. dealer wants $350.00 for the set and thats unpainted.
What's up? Been busy trying to keep two bodyshops going... easier said than done. It's ironic, we're setup to do restorations at the new shop but out of the 60 cars we've painted in the last 3 months, the majority are Corvettes. Guess I can't get it out of my blood.
In the meantime, I've been driving the M car... threw a paintjob on it, replaced the top, lowered it and put on a set of wheels. At almost 30 mpg, it sure beats driving the Hummer back and forth.
Not as good as my Corvette but definitely a higher fun factor... it's a blast to drive... oversized gokart.
Amy and I are talking about selling the house and moving into something else. Too many modifications here and I'll price the house out of the market.
Didn't mean to hijack your thread rdzat, glad you got your mouldings painted and on.
Mark
PS. If anyone needs a set of mouldings, I've got a complete set of silver (can't remember if it's Machine silver or not)
