Depends on where you are. On the freeway (or highway, depending on where you live!), it runs around 190. In the traffic, it goes up to 225 regularly. Don't like it, but gotta live with it. Sometimes, I'll even smell antifreeze, which makes me think my thermostat might be sticking. Just haven't checked it yet.

If you smell it inside the car it's almost always the heater core leaking. If you smell it outside the car after you shut it off it's almost always the water pump starting to leak. In either case the offending part will have to be replaced. I've never heard of a stuck thermostat causing an antifreeze smell unless it's over heating and boiling over which 220 won't cause.

Interesting Dave! Funny u mention it....I've always smelled coolant on my '95 Impala SS...outside car after shut down....even after a new water pump was installed. Mentioned it to a guy who's a mechanic for a local police dept garage...he says every chevy police car he's ever worked on have the coolant smell!
the only time my z heats up is when i'm sitting idling. to prevent this just turn on the ac. this runs both fans and you will see an immediate temp drop and it will stay down. it probably won't hurt it to leave it get a little hot as they are designed to run that way but i don't like it either so i run the air if i'm sitting.
my mechanic says chevy has both fans come on at about 227 if i remember that right. i don't let it get that hot though. as you notice, the red zone in your temp guage is much higher than that.

Does that mean the core is leaking inside the car?
