Whats up Brothers & Sisters! I recently returned from my deployment back in September & had my new baby delivered 2 days later. (Mil Yell 02 Z) Now for the bad news Over the last 2 weeks or so I have been hearing a rattle underneath the car when Up/Down shifting (Driving normally, no lead foot) It sounds like a metal on metal rattle like a loose exhaust bracket or something. I took it to a friend of mine who owns a shop that specializes in Corvettes and put it on the lift. We found a screw was missing from the heat shield on the left side header & thought we found the problem and replaced thew screw. I still heard the rattle as i was pulling out of his parking lot. I took it back, put it on the lift, but we could not find anything else loose on the exhaust system. It is definitely something loose somewhere between the headers & exhaust tips. I just cant pinpoint the problem. The car runs like dream, but it is just kinda embarrassing rolling through a parking lot or coming to a stop light with this hideous rattle. Not the head-turning attention getter im looking for..LOL Has anyone else experienced this problem? Thanks for any advice.
Welcome home brother and thanks for your service! The only way to come home is to have a new Z06 waiting for you!!! (I did the same in 03). Before I crossed over to the dark side I was a PMEL guy…
Not sure what the noise could be, and I had a ex stud break when I had warranty work on my car, replaced all of them, both sides to be sure, but that was a high frequency jingle, not your harsh one. No idea, and hope someone else chimes in with some better info. Again, thanks for your service brother!!!!

Thanks for the reply Chief. Actually Im not too far from you. Im at Shaw AFB, in Sumter SC. I just so happen to be the TMDE Coordinator for our flight. Yep, we deal with PMEL all the time...calibrations galore with all of our TMDE stuff. I just received a phone call from my cousin. He has an 01 Z and said that he had a similar problem and the culprit was the inards of his catalytic converters jingling around. Im going back to the shop today & see if thats it. Any more comments/opinions/suggestions welcome. Thanks!!

Small world man!!! I used to love the entire TMDE thing, great group of freeks too. I did not even think of the cats but I have heard of that, um gues I am having a senior moment here (only 37 ). Hope it is easy as that and should be a warnety issue. If you need some cats, I have mu 01 OEM H pipe with pups and cats, and I can cut them off and sent them to you, just give me a ship to address in PM and they will be on the way. Thanks again for your service brother

Welcome home and congrats on the little one!!
There is a thread from user "devnull" called "Quick fix for stock exhaust rattle" that I saved locally but can't find on the forum anymore. He said his rattle was from two springs near the front of the exhaust. He bought a spring from Lowe's to gang the two springs together and it fixed his rattle. I'll edit with a link to the thread if I can manage to find it.
I'm a PMEL troop too, but don't hold that against me
Campbell, Bragg, Drum, ROK (Casey), Honduras, Panama, Saudi Arabia, Germany (Manheim), Bragg, Gordon… Old as dirt, but still having a great time. I moved out of TMDE in the 98ish and miss it. I had a great time in the field and the troopers where awesome if deranged!
