The sevice column lock message came on this morning on our 01 Z06. So I searched some threads here and then called the local dealer. I took the car into the dealer two years ago for the column recall notice. They ordered the K-harness and it never arrived. So they have done nothing to this point for the recall. The dealer says the message may have nothing to do with the recall at all and if not it is going to cost $$$$$ to check it out and find a solution. I asked about removing the lock plate and he said "no way". Does anyone have any ideas or anything I can try. Should I wait till it fails?
Thanks

...under the current recall they are supposed to remove the locking plate.
Please don't quote me on this one, but I believe as long as your steering column isn't actually locked AND the dealer has never performed any recall work on it, that you could purchase a CLB (from Corvettes of Houston, etc.) and do the install...then never deal with this again.
Please check with the vendor or do a forum search to be absolutely sure, but I think the only cars that you cannot fix have either A) already locked or B) had the dealers install the K harness.
Get the CLB and be done with all this crap involving the recall. All the dealer is going to do is get you stranded again by installing their "known to fail" K harness. Call Corvettes of Houston now and order the CLB.
My 01 Z06 locked up while my CLB was on order. I was able to free it using the good old slam the wheel against the lock technique discussed on here. Then I parked it until the CLB came in. One hour later no more worries. Forget GM on this one and do the CLB. If GM couldnt get it right from 97 thru 04 and into two or three failed recalls I doubt they ever will.
Putting the CLB in does not necessarily mean you won't get stranded by the column lock. I have the bypass in and ONE TIME I started to move the car and the engine quit and the DIC said turn off car, wait 10 seconds and try again. My CLB is not defective...I could turn the wheel...so it wasn't truly locked up but the software apparently thought it was. I waited the 10 seconds and started it again with no problem after that. That's one time over a 2-year period and it didn't strand me but it could have.
Thanks for the replies. I have read all the searches on here I could find.
A friend told me yesterdsay to dicounnect the battery for 15 minutes. If the message (service column lock) does not come back on, then it probably is not necessary to take it into the dealer. Any comments?
I agree... I have had mine now for 8 months and no issues. This was after having the recall done. Recall = wasted time for me. It wasn't three weeks before it happened again. The CLB only took me about 15minutes to install and I have not looked back. Good luck!
