Default Tire problems

I am new to the forum and I need some advice. I have a 2000 vette and have been having a problem with the right front tire. It had 2 nails in it and I had it repaired. The next day the tire was down so return to tire shop and they repaired it again. This time I watched them. The 1st repair was very hard to get off and the repair man said he just could not see why it was leaking. Now the 2nd repair is leeking from the same hole the 1st one was. They think I have a pin hole inside the tire and the air is running through the cords to the repaired hole and letting the air out. This tire has about 50 % life left and I would like to save it if I can.
Has anyone had anything like this? If so can it be repaired or is it time for a new tire? If new tire should you replace one or two? Can you put differant brand tires on the front than the rear?

Thanks for your help.

Larry

Go in our C5 parts for sale section and get yourself a used one. Ebay might also have one for you.

Do you see any problems with just replacing just one?

Personally I'm not a fan of replacing a single tire. Why not have your tire shop take the wheel and tire off the car, and then submerge the whole assembly under water. They should be able to pinpoint the location of the leak. If it is an OEM Goodyear EMT, and the hole is in the tread not in the sidewall - it should be repairable. You might have to resort to going to an authorized Goodyear dealer that is familiar with the EMT to have it fixed properly.

Personally on a car like a Corvette - I think it's better to have like kind tires on all four corners....my opinion.

We have done that. The air is comming out the hole they repaired. They think it is comming form a hole inside the tire and running thru the cords to the old hole they fixed. Have you ever heard of that?

Larry...

I have never heard of the scenario that your repair shop is suggesting... but anything is possible.
There is a plug/patch combination that's been around for a long time. Unfortunately it requires that the tire be dismounted from the rim, so many shops don't like to use them.

I have used these exclusively for years and had no problems with leaks when I did. You might show them a picture and suggest this type plug (if they're not currently using them). They're available at most major auto parts stores (i.e. NAPA), or you can get them here...

Good luck... GUSTO

Just wanted to let you know I tried another shop today they explaned to me the 1st shop did not completely grind the ribs smooth on the inter part of the tire. Might be because of fear of damaging the tire. They did and put it back on the rim. Still had air leak. so they took it off again and used a sealer over the patch. They did this about 5 hours ago and it is holding as of now. I will have to see if it holds. I will let you know. The repair shop said they had never seen anything like this.
