Default Thompson astro tops $uck !

When the Knoxville Corvette expo rolled into town a couple of weekends ago , I pulled the trigger not on one but two ( I have 2 C5s) Astro tops to replace the delaminated tops on mine .
Well the tops looked great ! then a couple of days later it rained
and both cars leaked bad around the front window corners right into the seat both sides !
my tops had never leaked before , so I called customer service , if you can call it that , and I ended up with Drew , a very customer oriented technician , that right of the bat proceded to tell me that basically unless I figure out a way of throwing a tarp on my vettes to ship the defective tops back , there was nothing he could do .
I did explain to him that his tops are cut wrong at the front corners , a quarter inch too short and that I could see how the water was entering the car , but he tells me that my eyes are lying and his product is just fine
So it appears this one is going to the lawyer in the next couple of days

So next time you think of even giving Astro a call for your new top , think that you may have to deal with Drew just like i did !

don't say you were not warned !

Before you call your lawyer, I had a similar problem. It turns out the rear hook and front fasteners that came with the top needed to be fine tuned. The folks at Thompson helped me over the phone and the leaking stopped.

If the back hook has too much tension, that can cause the issue. The hook can be adjusted to correct. Additionally, the front fastening levers are attached to the top with allen screws. Be adjusting those you can tweak further.

I suspect you can solve your problem. It took me approx 15 minutes to complete the repair. Good luck.

I know you can adjust the factory tops, so maybe like snitz mentions these need to be adjusted also. Hope this all works out for you without a lawyer being involved.

The folks at Astro Tops just slap em together. I purchased a new glass top for my C4 from them, and when I tried to put it on, nothing lined up. I was about ready to make a call, and start cussing somebody out at Astro, and my wife comes along and starts waving a paper in my face.....directions on how to adjust the top. Now where the hell did THAT come from. She told me I should have looked deeper in the shipping box, laughed, and walked away shaking her head.
Once I got it adjusted, it fit great!

I had the same experience. I not only didn't read the install instructions at first, I almost threw them out.

I have considered this replacement top many times but I was always curious what the quality of the top was (other than the initial fit).

I did talk to someone over at a different shop like this and he specifically mentioned the adjustment that would be needed.

the Astro people were at the expo , and they were the ones to install the tops and adjusted them . the problem is that the front center of the top lines up fine , but the front corner edges are cut about a 1/4" too short , not allowing the corners to set on the seal , and the water rolls right into the car from the space in the corner . His answer was " impossible . my though was

Here is the Service Manual adjustment, hope it helps:

Corvette Targa Top Adjustment

Roof Lift Off Panel Adjustment
1. Perform one or more of the following five adjustment procedures to properly align the roof lift off panel.

2. To adjust the front striker for up down roof alignment perform the following steps:
3. Remove the windshield upper garnish molding. Refer to Windshield Upper Garnish Molding Replacement in Interior Trim.
A. For major up down roof adjustment loosen the striker bolts and reposition the latch striker up or down.
B. For minor up or down roof adjustment loosen the striker outboard bolt and slightly loosen the inboard bolt, pivot the striker on the inboard bolt in 2 mm (0.08 in) increments up or down.
Notice
Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
C. Tighten the striker bolts. Tighten
Tighten the roof front latch handle striker bolts to 10 N•m (89 lb in).
D. When the striker is properly adjusted the handle will snap closed.
4. Install the windshield upper garnish molding. Refer to Windshield Upper Garnish Molding Replacement in Interior Trim.

5. To adjust the front latch handle forward or rearward perform the following steps:
. Loosen the latch handle bolts.
A. Position the latch handle forward or rearward. Maintain a minimum of 2 mm (0.08 in) clearance between latch handle and the latch striker to avoid squeaks and rattles.
B. Assure the latch handle base is parallel to the striker to provide clearance to the sunshade mirror door.
C. Tighten the latch handle bolts. Tighten
Tighten the roof front latch handle bolts to 13 N•m (10 lb ft).

6. For major rear latch adjustment adjust the rear latch striker performing the following steps:
A. Remove the roof lift off panel.
B. Remove the roof bow center interior trim panel. Refer to Trim Panel Replacement - Rear Roof Bow in Interior Trim.
C. Loosen the rear latch striker attaching bolts.
D. Adjust the position of the latch striker forward or rearward for major adjustment.
E. Tighten the striker attaching bolts. Tighten
Tighten the roof rear striker bolts to 10 N•m (89 lb in).
F. Install the roof lift off panel.

7. For minor rear latch adjustment, adjust the latch handle hook one turn at a time to achieve moderate pressure to the latch as follows.
. Remove the roof lift off panel.
A. Loosen the set screw locking the latch hook.
B. Turn the hook in to tighten or out to loosen.
C. Tighten the set screw.
D. Install the roof panel.

8. To adjust the rear locator perform the following steps:
. With the roof installed on the vehicle loosen the locator mounting bolts.
A. Reposition the locator.
B. Tighten the mounting bolts. Tighten
Tighten the roof rear locator to locator bracket bolts to 10 N•m (89 lb in).
