I've asked this before in the sales thread and was directed over here so here it goes.
I've seen a number of 97-99 C-5's on Autotrader in the 17k-18k price range. would it be considered low balling to offer 15k-16k depending on the car?
Um, so what if it is? There's nothing illegal or immoral about lowballing. Offer what it's worth *to you*. What the market thinks it's worth doesn't mean much unless you intend to turn around and sell it immediately.
We're entering the slow time for musclecar sales in many parts of the country. Some folks, unfortunately, get into binds where they *must* sell soon. This can be very hard for them (I've been on that end of the deal), but good for you - but only if you're willing to go in, offer what you think is a good price, and either pay immediately if it's accepted, or pass.
Remember, it's not personal, it's just business. Don't let any salesman, private seller or otherwise, turn it personal on you. You will pay thousands for the priviledge. Keep it impersonal.
If you really want to come in cheap, wait until mid-January. When those Christmas credit-card bills hit, everyone is selling and no one is buying.
First rule... have the money if you make an offer. They will say yes or no, not a big insult, most people leave some jocky room in their price. I always point out anything that I will have to fix, and deduct for it... I have bought nice cars that way, and saved some money...
Attacking their price is not usually a good way to get a conversation started. I ask if the price is 'firm' or if that is their 'bottom dollar'. If yes, I move on. If no, then we can start to negotiate.
Make your offer. Its only a deal when both parties say yes. There is no harm in trying to obtain the best value for your money. Just please make sure your serious and have cash on hand ready to go.
Thanks I understand it's just business .... I sold a 74 and an 84 over the years and thought I moved the cars for far less than I wanted to but I needed to move them and that was that. I was just wondering if that was reasonable to think I could get a better deal this time of year.
I also agree that Jan maybe my best bet it also gives me some time to figure out what my Camaro is worth so i can get rid of it.
