Default Which drag tires

Hi Guys
I work for the local power plant in Phoenix and a bunch of guys are sponsoring a run what you brung day at the local drag strip. I have a extra set of stock Z06 wheels I want to get some drag tires for. Just want to set the Z06 up right. What are your reccommendations? Best place to buy? Any body have some nice used ones for sale around my area?

MT ET Street radials, 275 40 x 17s are perfect on oem Z 17 fronts. Start off around 20 psi and go down as the track takes it and you feal ok with it. Read Ranger's post on launching and yuo should be fine. Good luck and tel us how you do.
Dave
PS I have an extra set, radials on Z fronts but I am on the other side of the us in GA...

I want to use the whole set of stock wheels, so I'll need 18's for the rear and 17's for the front. Who makes a good drag radial for these? I have chrome Z06 wheels on the car now and I don't want to mix and match. I want it to look good also, as I kick some Mustang butt.

Well if you got to run the 18's in the back (which is what I do with my stock set of wheels) then you have 2 choices.... BFG's or Nitto's

the BFG's will hook better but they wear out extremely fast and they offer nothing in the way of foul weather traction (should you happen to get caught in the rain). The nitto on the other hand is close to a full tread depth tire that actually has a treadwear rating of 100, it wont hook quite as good as the BFG but is still superior to any regular radial style street tire.

So basically everyone agrees that MT Drag Radials are the way to go?

That depends on the relationship you want to have with your clutch.

The MT Radials will wear out a stock clutch in 50-75 passes. That's because they require a launch rpm that is higher by about 1000 than BFG 315.35.17s, that will give 150-200 passes before the clutch will need replacement.

The MT Radials will produce poor 60' if the burnout sequence is not precise. But if driven very well, they are just a bit more consistent than the BFGs.

With only diff being tires, the advantage of MT Radials is well less than a tenth, and to get that the burnout must be optimal, and they will wear out the clutch about twice as fast.

So, you must decide what's best for you, given those considerations.

BFG 315.35.17s???? These will fit the fronts? 17x9.5?

295/35 R18 Drag Radial

275/40 R17 Drag Radial 2

Would a 17 or 18 be better for traction?

I ran BFG 315.35.17s on my 2002 Z06 for about 250 passes. They averaged low 1.7X 60' and an occasional 1.6X. They will give 100-125 passes per pair.

The 18" are a different tread design and compound. I don't like it as well and one my C6Z, it gave far fewer passes before replacement was necessary (like 30 passes).

I plan to run 315.35.17 BFGs on my C6Z, after trying a borrowed pair for five passes, including my 10.85.

A number of notable Z06 racers have mounted the 315s on C5Z front wheels (17" x 9.5"), which are readily available for about $350-400 a pair. That wheel is strong and light. Narrower than recommended, but it works fine at the drags. It is the wheel I plan to use on my C6Z too.

If you are going to run just at the track with the tires I suggest Mickey Thompson ET streets. The regular Et streets have worked the best for me and you can get them as big as 17 inches.
