Default c 5 spare tire

I took my runflats off, because I could not stand the ride.
Has someone tried to find a donut spare tire and rim from a junk yard that would fit and get you off the road. Any idea of what brand and size that would fit?

I've read that a few people have machined about 1/16 inch out of the center hole on a new GTO spare to fit their C5s.

First post since 2001? Welcome old timer/newbie!!!

I wouldn't bother with a donut spare - good luck finding one that will clear both the front and rear calipers, have the right offset so it doesn't rub and the right bolt pattern (120mm). Not to mention that you will need to start carrying a jack too.

Just get yourself a small 12v compressor - I bought mine at Wal-Mart for $10, a plug and patch kit, and some other stuff like something to kneel/lay down on, a flashlight and maybe a pair of Mechanix gloves.

Tthe other route you can take is a charged up cell phone and AAA.

Again - welcome to the forum!

Default Flat fix ?????

Probably a tire repair kit from a Z0-6 would work. A can of "FIX A FLAT??? I think any C-5 would be hard to jack up along side of the road.

My understanding is taht fix-a-flat ruins your sensors. I bought one of these:

http://www.tirerack.com/accessories/...tkit/index.jsp

This is a compressor and has a builtin sealant. Use as a compressor for tires and if you have a flat, inject the sealant while using the compressor (sealant is built in).

Gto spare clears both front and rear calipers, you must shave about 1/16 of aluminum out of the center hole.

if "fix-a-flat" ruins your tire pressure monitors, so what? you don't have the run flats anymore... don't really need the tpsm's....if you use the tire rack unit you still have to "clean" the sensors so they'll function in the future.

I have to disagree with your logic, Dave. I don't have runflats or stock wheels anymore, and I still use my TPS, If anything it's more important than ever. With run flats and stock wheels, if the tire is low or flat, I could still drive on it for up to 200 miles provided I was using the Goodyear EMT's.

With the current set up - I want to know if I have a tire losing air pressure ASAP! With the current crop of Ultra low profile tires, detecting a low tire by a simple visual inspection is harder than ever. Having the proper inflation in my tires, and knowing their status could save a tire ($400 in the case of my back ones), a wheel (about $900) the car - or even my life. I'd say it's worth using what GM gave us in this case.

Also - by Federal Mandate - 100% of all vehicles manufactured after 8/31/2007 must have a tire pressure monitoring system. And to think that Corvettes had them way back in 1997......hmmmmmm.

I agree with BlackSedan87 - just get the stuff mentioned and go on your way. A cell phone can always be used to call for help if needed.

Just went the same way, non-runflats, small compressor and a repair kit.
For long trips I bought the GTO spare and I ordered a Mercedes Jack from C5Frederik a forum member.
Even with the Runflats I understand a puncture in any but the GY Runflats requires a new Tire. The 50 mile limit placed on non GY may not get to a place close enough to locate an equivalent replacement particularly on a weekend afternoon, so why bother.
If I used my car as a DD it might be another story.
Just my opinion!

I was talking to my preferred tuner today and the same question came up. He said that he found that the space-saver spare from a late F-body fits and works fine, front and rear. That's what he carries in his personal C5 on long trips.

no way jose! thats when u need it most. half the time a flat tire is a slow leak. when the pressure goes below 25 u will get the warning display meaning get the hell home

Default GTO spare

Bought my GTO spare from Pick a Part in Cleveland(ebay). Great Deal and fast shipping. The GTO mag without the donut spare tire lists for over $200.00 in the GM parts book. So $65.00 plus shipping is a steal. Save the Wave.>george

If you are out on a long road trip, carrying a F-body or GTO spare is one thing, finding a place for the dead standard tire/wheel is another

Interesting point about where to put the Flat Tire. Has anyone ever checked to see if there is anyway to get the Flat into the car? Hatch or Trunk lid open? Passenger seat (minus passenger)?

Along with the issue of "where to put the dead tire" ....

Has anyone checked to see if you can get a jack under the car WHEN THE TIRE IS FLAT ???

It is tough enough finding jacks that will get under the car when the tires are inflated, I'd bet the front jacking points will be at least another inch lower with a front tire flat. I had a rear flat in my garage one time and it was a PITA getting the jack under the rear jacking point.
