rear bumper
I bought a 2000 coupe and just noticed I am missing a rear bumper.
Do these cars not need a rear bumper ? What part of the rear end gets damaged the most from taps/hits in the rear ?

Your bumpers are invisible... just feel around you'll find them! Or just don't hit/tap/bump anything!

If it looks like you're missing a rear bumber, perhaps you bought a C6!

Hmmm. 66 yrs old. 38 posts. Business guy.
So, I'm going to bet your serious. Bumpers are non-existent. Because of the composition/material of the car a bumper would not be estetically pleasing and frankly pretty useless in an accident. No bumpers on these babbies for several (C5) generations.

Assuming you're serious... there are bumpers, just not big chrome ones like on a truck.
The front and rear bumper covers are called facias on a car like this... when you remove them you see the foam absorber and the front and rear reinfocement beams. On a C5 the front and rear bumper beams are integrated with the frame.
Most new cars are designed this way... but on a C5 the rear facia is flat, unlike a mustang or most any other car where it sticks out. All the same components are there.
Below shows you the chassis and how the beam is integrated.
Here's the rear
Foam parts called "absorbers" attach to the bars... her's my car w/ the bumper off. There is a similar piece in the rear.

I was a little joking and a little serious.
I learned something.
I was basically wondering how well the front/rear defended itself in parking lot skirmishes.
Glad everyone had a laugh.
