I did this modification earlier this year (begining of summer) and will NEVER get another exhaust. I LOVE how it sounds (have a video if you guys want to hear). As Ace said...it isn't "that" noticeable but once those RPM's climb it honestly does have almost an "exotic" sound...it is a very unique sound indeed.

Exotic...yes, that may be the best way to describe it. It certainly doesn't sound like other exhausts I've heard for the Vettes.

-100 feet of Ti welding rod (smallest measure of purchase= .25lb)= $25
-$300 for Tim's time and skill as a welder
-remove/install system= $30 lift rental from local shop

The tubing was purchased from Tico Titanium...I dealt with Tim.
http://ticotitaniuminc.thomasnet.com...ktoname=&pane=

My welder recommended going to a thicker tubing, as the .035" wall tubing was very difficult to notch...too thin. I think they have .06" tubing, it'd be easier to cut.

---Finding a welder who would do this was not easy. Most people are not willing to experiment with titanium. Based on quite a bit of research and reading, Ti is much like stainless steel but requires more argon shielding. If you can find a welder who is familiar with stainless steel and he'd be willing to up the argon on the torch and backfill the exhaust, then you'll be fine....it is not required to place the exhaust in a "chamber"- we are not building surgical implants or nuclear reactors.

Be good,
Tom
EXCELLENT Info!!! Might be worth it to send them to your guy. Thanks very much.

He's willing to do it again, shouldn't be a problem. I'm sure he has left-over welding rod, too, so that shouldn't be a requirement...but I would go with the thicker tube, though.

Oh, and just to clarify, the sales guy at Tico was also named Tim. He was a great guy to deal with, as he sent me 4 feet total...2 for Tim "the welder" to "get a feel"...at no charge.

Be good,
Tom

If I'm not mistaken, it actually creates noise, not reduces it. Essentially you're partially bypassing the rear mufflers, which allows for slightly less muffling and also less backpressure.

Well, I had my buddy come over and rev the car while I stood behind it..... DAMN!!!! The sound is awesome...there's a nice bark to the exhaust that sounds very similar to the Corsa Sport. I had a Corsa sport on my CTS-V, same engine, and it sounds almost the same...perhaps a little less volume, though...but only slightly.

And there is absolutely no drone up to 2.5K rpm...at 2.5K there is a little drone.

More to come, once it warms up a little in NY.

Be good,
Tom

Excellent write up. I think you'll convince a lot more of us to go this route! I just wish I decided to do it BEFORE selling my stock TI's.

During that to the exhaust is cool, but would it be legal in California for passing smog? Just wounder if anyone knows. Thanks, Happy Holidays.

The mod has no influence on emissions ... just the exhaust's noise level.

Modifying the exhaust without a CARB number is not legal. However, this Ti bypass pipe has no effect on the sniffer test so if the smog inspector does not catch the mod you should pass. If the inspector notices it during the visual inspection, technically he should fail the car even before it's put on the sniffer.

Please post video or sound clips if you can guys. I have my original stock ti's up in the attic just sitting there doing nothing. Would like to hear the sound this mod produces, may get me to climb back up in the attic and retrieve the ti's and send them out.
