I have a friend who just bought a 98 with an A4 and he called me and said he is getting a message that says something about column lock. I have read threads here about the column lock thing but thought it was only on the MN6's. Do the A4's also have the column lock problem? Where can he get a fix? Thanks for the help.
I did the column lock recalls and still had the column lock issue until the clb bypass on my 98 a4.Fifteen minutes and fifty dollars and never an issue again.

What ever you, do not do the recalls. They reflash the computer (lose any custom programing) and it will shut the fuel off.

Can I hijack here fo ra minute. I was told that the DIC showing "remove key wait 10 secs" could also mean CL. I've had it happen, cleaned the key just in case like some had suggested but I have gotten it 3 times since. Does that mena its the CL or could it be something else?? I also read about people asking about codes. How do I find the codes---all I get is what the DIC tells me? BEing it is going to my mechanic---I might as well get it done if necessary..

Not true.....Had the recall fix done to my '98 A4 4+ years ago. Nothing was done to the computer and I haven't have one bit of trouble w/ the recall or the car. I originally had a CLB on my car and got codes, etc. and then finally removed it. The A4 recall "fix" does not call for any reflashing of the computer. Just have to be certain the dealer understands this as well. Good luck...

The fix that they were doing 4 years ago did not reflash the computer. But after they found this fix still did not work, the new recall does. GM has had several recalls and solutions to this very easy to solve problem.

Sorry, but, I think you are wrong. I don't believe there was any program reflash w/ AUTOMATIC transmission C5's.

Correct - the recall for early automatics involves blocking the lock pin so it can't engage. It's not a reflash. In fact, once the recall is done, you can still hear the "zrrrrk" sound the lock makes, but it doesn't do anything - you can turn the wheel with the ignition off.
